Chapter Seven

Candy

I watch Forrest walk out as my mother screeches in my ear, “Did you get the deal? You know your sister is counting on you.”

“I’m fine, Mother, thanks for asking,” I say sarcastically. She doesn’t even seem to realize that I didn’t make it to their place last night. For a second, I had thought that maybe, just maybe, she was calling to check on me. What a silly thought.

“Catherine! I don’t want to hear your attitude right now. Answer me.”

“No. You seem to have forgotten to mention that Veronica had already contacted him and he’d turned her down. Multiple times, might I add,” I fume.

“You should’ve studied business at school instead of that accounting nonsense, then you’d understand how these things go and you would’ve been able to secure Mr. Montgomery.”

“You mean like Veronica’s did? Because she has a degree in business and it seems as if that didn’t do her much good,” I calmly respond and hear her suck in a breath.

I know she’s about to go nuclear and suddenly, I’ve reached my limit. I’m so sick of dealing with their crap and listening to them belittle me and nitpick every choice I make. I’m self-sufficient and have been for a long time. I don’t need their criticism, money, nor their version of family. I know that I’m finally standing up to them because of what Forrest said to me last night. I just couldn’t stop thinking about what he said about my family last night and I realized that he was right. I shouldn’t put up with their crap. I deserve to be treated better.

“I’m not coming home.”

“Excuse me, young lady?” My mother asks in a deadly tone. When I repeat myself word for word, all she has to say is, “Quit being dramatic, Catherine. The snow will stop. I expect you here tonight. You can explain to your sister then why you weren’t able to secure the contract with Mr. Montgomery.”

“No. It’s not the weather and it’s not just now. I’m done. I’m never coming home again. I’m so sick of being treated like crap by all of you. I don’t need it or you. Forrest doesn’t want to sign her stupid contract and Veronica already knows that. Leave him and me alone. Merry Christmas, Mother.”

I hit end on the phone call, hanging up on her. I don’t want to hear whatever she has to say. She tries to call me back, so I turn it off, knowing I’ll have nasty voicemails waiting when I eventually turn my phone back on, but I don’t care. I feel lighter than I have in years because I finally stood up for myself and don’t have to put up with any of them anymore.

The heater kicks on, telling me Forrest must have gotten the generator running. The snow has lessened some I notice as I try to spot him through the falling flurries, but I can still tell I’ll be stuck here for a couple of days.

The thought of being snowed in with Forrest brings a smile to my face.
