Chapter 16
For all he knew, Lacie would go out and sleep in that barn just to spite him. Why did people always do the worst things for themselves when they thought they were getting back at someone else?
To his relief, she was sitting in the hall outside their door with her back against the wall, hugging her knees to her chest. Most of the lights were off, but a few lamps were lit on tables along the way. Jared released a relieved sigh and settled down beside her.
âHey,â he said.
âHey.â She scrubbed a hand beneath her nose.
âYou know I didnât mean it, right?â
She fastened her gaze on her feet. âDidnât mean what?â
âThat I donât want you a part of the picture.â
Lacie rolled her eyes to the ceiling, looking everywhere but at him. She leaned her head against the wall. âYouâre so confusing sometimes.â
âI know,â he said. âAnd Iâm sorry.â
She let her gaze drift. Tiredness and sorrow rimmed her startlingly green eyes, along with something else too. She skewered him with a look that let him know she wasnât kidding around any longer.
âWhy do you want to be with someone like that?â
âLike what, Tia?â
âYeah. It seems wrong that sheâs giving you this ultimatum. That you canât have your old friends if you want to be with her. Thatâs not how a relationship should work.â
Jared pinched his eyes closed and expelled a breath. Lacie voiced the very thing heâd been struggling with since his goodbye kiss with Tia. Ugh. If only heâd broken up with her then. Tia had given him the perfect opening for it. He could have wished her well. He could have moved on.
âYouâre right,â he said. She made him sound like such a pansy, which was the worst insult he could receive. Of all people, Lacie knew how hard Jared worked to be as strong as he could be. To imply that someone could override him that easily? That he would allow someone to override him? She was right. He just didnât know what to do about it.
âThen why do you like her?â
Tia was beautiful and confident. Driven. Like an idiot, though, the only thing Jared could think of to say was that he liked kissing her, and he couldnât tell Lacie that. That would make him sound like the most superficial of all male specimens. There were other things about her he admired too, werenât there?
What did he like about her? Why should he consider giving up his oldest friend for her?
âAll Iâm saying, is that sheâs my girlfriend. And respecting her requests would be the right thing to doâassuming we wanted to stay together.â Which was no longer the case.
âBut canât you see that just because youâre dating someone doesnât mean theyâre always right to ask for certain things? Just because youâre dating her, that doesnât give her the right to dictate your choices.â
âYou make it sound like Iâm letting her tell me what to do.â
âAre you?â
He didnât like the turn of this conversation, but she was also asking questions he couldnât ignore.
