Chapter

Eighteen

I couldn't say I was happy to be hiking to the scene of the most horrifying moment of my life, but I knew I had to act fast if I wanted to stop Henry Younts.

The trail head to the Falls was just as I remembered, and as I slid from the Jeep, I had to remind myself that Red Rover wasn't lurking on the other side of the river, keeping pace with me and Dylan as we sprinted for safety.

Still, the woods seemed strangely familiar, the night sounds a chilling reminder that nothing really changed despite my desire to believe otherwise.

I grabbed a flashlight but made a promise to myself to only use it once I'd gotten to the island. I didn't want to attract attention, and the best way to maneuver through the darkness was the same way the animals did.

A short time later I heard the rushing of the Falls and knew I had to stay on the western bank. The blackness seemed to part like a heavy curtain as my eyes began to adjust, and so I stopped, listened for any sound that might be out of place, and heard nothing.

I was at the edge of the marsh now, memories flooding my brain of Adam jumping the water, and Dylan--pushing my brother aside before we could finish what we'd started.

I paused, my toes on the edge of the bank when I heard someone in front of me, their movements just brushing my ears. Squinting into the darkness, I saw a person move out on the island and dropped to my knees.

How could someone be out here in the middle of the night? No one knew about this place besides a handful of people, half of whom were dead.

I waited, crouching in the darkness as the person bent down, searching for something.

Moments later they stood, walking towards the other side and I waited until I heard him jump the water before crossing on my own.

Once there, I crouched down again, waited a few moments before turning on my flashlight and searching for the medicine wheel I had drawn with my finger the summer before.

It was there--charred to blackness and with splashes of my blood dotting it like some grotesque version of the Rorschach test. I blinked once, unable to believe it remained intact exactly as I remembered it.

But then I thought of the shaman, remembered his love for Odessa and Cal and knew the same power protected this place as well.

I stood and walked in a slow circle, stopping once to listen for the return of the man I'd seen. I tried to remember where each totem had been placed and if there was any way to prove they had been destroyed aside from the scattering of ash that seemed to speak for itself.

Dropping to my knees again, I traced the lines, my fingers digging into dirt and ash and dried blood. Frantic, I followed the spokes to the center, to the place where I had pushed the snakeskin into the soft earth--and found nothing.
