At some point during the train ride, I nodded off to sleep.

It wasn’t until dawn broke over the horizon, the sun streaming through the window to rudely pierce through my eyelids, that I sleepily started to wake up... and realized that I was quite comfortable, for sleeping on a train trip.

It took a moment longer for me to realize that there was a warm arm wrapped securely around me, and that I was snuggled close against a broad chest, and that someone’s head was pressed against mine, and that my hand was resting on his knee...

I blinked, giving my head a shake. Okay, this was fine. Matthew and I accidentally cuddled together. No biggie. We were on a train, sitting next to each other. This was a totally normal thing to do.

...Come to think of it, we probably should have expected it might happen.

Oops.

It occurred to me that I still hadn’t actually moved away from Matthew, and when I heard his breathing change, I chanced a look up.

His face was inches from mine, his eyes open. Gazing right back at me.

We stayed like that for a moment, frozen, bodies pressed against each other, not saying anything—because what could we say? There was sure as hell nothing “friendly” about the way we were looking at each other.

The train jostled as it made a turn and I fell against him. Matthew’s arm tightened around me, his other arm catching hold to steady me.

“Easy there,” Matthew said, his voice low and husky in my ear, and it was everything I could do to not snuggle right back against his body. I thought I felt the brush of his lips on my hair, and then he released me and I righted myself in my seat.

“Thanks,” I said, covering my mouth to stifle a yawn, still feeling a little disoriented after just waking up.

Matthew rubbed his hand on his leg and resumed his brooding stare out the window. “Any time.”

The rest of the trip passed uneventfully. Matthew’s stop was before mine, and at last I was getting off the train and finally walking through the door of my beloved condo.

Home again.

I set my suitcase on the hardwood floor and gazed around my suite with contentment as sirens blared on the street below and people shouted at each other on the sidewalk, the harsh sounds of the city loud and clear through my closed windows.

Fort Edwin had nothing on downtown city life.
