Did she hear anything? Do I ask if she heard anything? No, if she didn’t, then I’ll have to explain, and if she did… Fucking Jasmine. Why did she have to open her big mouth? Even if she was curious, and it was any of her fucking business, texting is a thing. A private thing that people can’t overhear. I glance over at Bex, sitting up straight and still as a statue in the passenger seat, but I can’t tell how she’s feeling. I feel like there’s too much acid roiling around in my stomach. Still, when we get up to her door, Bex invites me in, so I’m actively working to convince myself everything isn’t completely fucked. All I want, more than anything in the world, is for this all to be back under my control.

Bex methodically clears out the purse she was carrying and puts it away while my phone vibrates in my pocket.
