Chapter 9
Sage tried not to pout as Nic packed his suitcases. The past two weeks had been the best of her life. They spent as much time as they could with one another. She hadnât slept in her own bed since that first night she shared his. How was she going to sleep alone for the next few weeks? This was exactly what she didnât want to do. Getting close to him wasnât an option. He was leaving her...again.
âDonât look so sad.â He pulled her into his chest. âYouâll be in Kingston right after the holidays.â
âI know.â She wished they didnât have to be apart. How had she become so attached to him in such a short period of time? âItâs only a week and a half.â
âIt will be a long week and a half. Are you sure you canât fly in on the twenty-sixth? You can spend Christmas Day with your family and then we can be together a few days before you start your new job.â
âI have plans with friends.â She didnât get to see her childhood friends often. When she came home for the holidays, she visited with them. A few of them were married and had babies. âYou remember Kelli and Laura. We have a girls night planned.â
âCanât you reschedule?â He tucked her hair behind her ears. âI want to be with you.â
She had to stay strong. The separation would do her some good. She was falling too hard, too fast. âWe should stick to the original plan. Iâll be there after the first.â
âOkay.â He didnât try to persuade her any further. âI donât have to report to spring training until March, so you can have my undivided attention until then. Iâll show you around Kingston.â
âThink of all the things we could do in that time.â She wasnât sure who she was trying to remind that this relationship was supposed to be purely physical anymore. âThe time away will make our reunion much more explosive.â
âWell, in that case, I look forward to seeing you after the New Year.â He pressed his lips to hers, deepening the kiss. His warm tongue probed hers; at first soft and slow, but then he became impatient, tangling his fingers in her hair and guiding her onto the bed.
âYouâll miss your flight.â She lay flat on her back with him on top of her.
âI donât care.â He unbuttoned her shirt, spreading it open so he could kiss her neck and chest. âI donât want to leave you.â He brushed his lips across her nipple, biting it through the cotton of her bra.
âI donât want you to go either.â Why couldnât she fight these feelings? Why did he have to be so charming, amazing, and caring?
âThese past two weeks were more than I could have imagined when I got here. I didnât think you were going to have anything to do with me.â He kissed her lips as he slipped her yoga pants down her hips. âI just need one more memory of you to take with me.
