CHAPTER 14

The drunk man was still asleep and snoring, floating in the violent waves of the La Fiesta swimming pool. The water was a murky green thrashing him from side to side, but he stayed wedged safely in the inner tube. A snake glided toward and twisted around his ankle and up to his hairy belly. The drunk man stopped snoring and a big wave bumped him hard against the side of the pool. He opened his eyes and realized everyone was gone. Then he noticed the sky. “What the hell?” He squinted and touched the top of his head, realizing his hat was gone. The pool was murky, green water and had a thick film of algae floating across the top. Lizards and frogs on lily pads, wriggling snakes, and turtles. It had turned into a swamp. He shrieked and frantically paddled toward the edge to get out and a wave thrashed him more toward the middle of the pool. Another wave slammed over him and a turtle landed on his leg. “Ahhh!” he yelled, picked it up, and chucked it across the pool with a hard splash.

When he did that, something moved over there. The water was sludge green, but there was a large shadow moving around, somewhere underneath. He waved his hands through the water, trying to get toward the edge of the pool again as the shadow came closer and then was right next to him. He went pale white as a flash of ruby lightning slashed across the sky. Just inches away, the shadow moved toward the crest of the water and came up. The top of a head, blonde hair appeared. A young woman. She was beautiful with mesmerizing eyes. They were jade green and glittery. She smiled.

The man’s face went flush and unthinking, he smiled back. He couldn’t help it and felt a creeping sensation that he was trapped, stuck in place. His muscles tensed as he watched. Slowly, she raised her arms out of the water. Two hands with long nails grabbed onto the inner tube and she pulled herself up, almost getting into the inner tube with him. She looked into his eyes, focusing and he could not look away. She was so beautiful and yet he was terrified. His heart was leaping in his chest. His face was getting hot. He wanted to pull away.

“Come into the water.” She said softly. Something splashed behind her and then came up again. It was the back end of a large fish tail. Glittering. He recognized her in that instant and his eyes went electric with panic, and he gasped. “No. no. no.”

Her tail splashed again, and she dug her nails into the inner tube, popping it open. “Come into the water.” She smiled, exposing her tiny, jagged teeth. She grabbed his bare legs and dug her nails into his skin, shredding it open.

He began to shriek and wail, clutching the sides of the tube as it deflated in between his fingers. She screamed and pulled him out of it.
