We had so much sex that night I was sore the next morning. My nether regions ached with a beautiful reminder of the most amazing night of my life, and I was smiling as I let myself into the house.

“Well. Look who it is.” Mom came out of the kitchen with her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face, immediately ruining my mood.

“I told you I might be out late.”

“You went out with the hockey player again.”

“His name is Vaughn.” I met her gaze.

“Why, Juliet? Why would you ruin your life like this?”

“How am I ruining my life? Dating a nice man who makes me laugh and is sweet and kind doesn’t hurt me in any way.”

“And Carlo? What about how this hurts him?”

“I’m sorry about that, but I told him it was over. I don’t want to marry him. I know—”

“You know nothing,” she snapped. “You’re throwing away your future—and for what? Some playboy professional athlete who will use you until he’s bored and then find someone else.”

“This has nothing to do with Vaughn,” I cried. “This is about how unhappy Carlo and I were together. Not just me, both of us. Now that we’re older we don’t have anything in common. He’s selfish and a freakin’ prude. I’m not going to spend the rest of my life with someone who bores me to death. I’m just not.”

She glared at me. “So, what? You’ll go from man to man until someone exciting finally wants to marry you?”

“That’s what Mario’s done and yet, three divorces later, he’s still your favorite.”

“I don’t have favorites.” Her eyes blazed but color had crept onto her cheeks.

“Don’t you? Three divorces and you’ve never said a word to him. I try to end an engagement that’s destined to fail before we actually get married, and you’re acting like I’m bringing on the apocalypse or something.”

“He’s a man.”

My mother and I had always butted heads, but we were a close-knit, loving family. Most of the time. Sometimes we argued or yelled, but five minutes later we usually forgot about it and moved on. This was different, and I just stared at her.

“I’m sorry you feel that way. I have to get ready for work.”

“Your father would be ashamed,” she called after me.

I stopped and slowly turned around. “Dad would be ashamed of me? Or you are but don’t want to say it? Because Dad wanted me to be happy. Dad was always telling me to follow my dreams of opening a bakery or to take classes part-time since I still wanted to go to college. Dad wouldn’t have wanted me to marry a man I wasn’t in love with. It makes me really sad that you do.”

I turned and ran up the stairs, hoping I’d hold off the tears until I was in the shower. My mother was always a little tough on us kids, especially me, but the conversation we’d just had really hurt my feelings. Even if Vaughn never called again, I still wasn’t going back to Carlo, and I didn’t know how to make everyone understand that.
