On flight day 2, Tammy and I set up and laboriously tested the Space Vision System (SVS), a TV-computer combination designed to provide precise robot arm guidance for Space Station assembly crews. In this early experimental version, SVS used two laptop computers and what seemed like a mile of power and video wiring.

MET 1/10:44. It’s early morning over [north] central Africa, the Sahel, and we’re looking over a lot of clouds over central Africa today. We’re in a belly-forward, Ieft-wing-to-the-ground attitude. SPAS is behind us. Not a very good Earth-viewing attitude, because we only have one window that’s facing the ground, and that’s the commander’s window. It’s been a long, long day: got up over 15 hours ago. We spent almost a good eight hours of that working on SVS today. Very slow, methodical work with computer and camera, nothing very exciting there. And a huge amount of wiring to do. What an incredible amount of overhead for a system. Did have some fun flying the arm today, but because of a headache, and backache, and stuffy nose, I didn’t really enjoy most of the day that much because of the way I along with a bunch of jokes from our instructors. I’m sitting sideways, looking right out the window…the side hatch window…at the Earth below, and clouds and early morning sun coming in across the Earth. Pretty bunch of clouds there this morning. This is probably the eastern Atlantic.

I didn’t have much of an appetite today, thanks to the stuffy head, backache, headache and queasiness. Some of the odors of the food seemed to provoke queasiness…an upset stomach this evening and this afternoon.
