Chapter Thirty-Six
Elana sank onto the tiny, rough bed. The cell wasnât small; there was enough space to move, but because she was given drugs to prevent her from being lucid and coherent, she was supposed to be half-asleep and not walking around. Except the drugs had stopped working on her.
She felt as if her system had cleared itself, not fully, but enough to allow her brain to function. She was able to think, so she could come up with a plan. She couldnât gather her powers; she wasnât strong enough to beat the dimming effect, but she was grateful she had some control back. She couldnât let them know.
She was still wearing her armour, and her wounds of the battle were now healed. Twice a day, a female servant came to feed her and brought water and medication. She also helped Elana clean up and go to the bathroom. Elana pretended to be in a drowsy state, and the servant got less scared of her with time. Elana didnât know for sure, but she estimated that close to two months had passed since their defeat.
When she moved on the bed, the chains rattled. She didnât want to lose her strength, so she did some exercises when no one was there. She was able to figure out the schedule of the supervisor, and whenever he was away, she used this time to keep herself fit.
Elana was confident it was just a matter of time before Aerella and Edward figured something out. Elana had great trust in her twin sisterâs ability to find a way to free her. Even though the drugs werenât working, trying to escape on her own would be foolish. The guards said they were in the palace dungeons.
Should the inevitable come to the Red Island, they had thought of a plan to send Aerella to the Continent for good. Elana trusted her sister had made it there safely. Aerella had established contact with the Continentâs rebels, and if the Red Island fell, she would try to find a way to free their people. Elana couldnât predict she herself would be captured alive. But she was also confident her last spell worked for Edward, and looking like a Continental, he had a greater chance at finding his way around and eventually joining Aerella and the rebels.
These pieces were simply hopes. But that was the only thing Elana had now.
From the sounds of it, the dungeons didnât have many people. They were here for a long time, according to what she was able to figure out, all weak or sick. It was dark, and the smell was terrible, but the dank conditions were a minor inconvenience when she thought of what her people endured. She felt furious, helpless, but she couldnât allow herself to be weakened. The Continentals wouldnât kill the magicians; they needed them as a workforce. She had hope. After all, the people she was counting on were the best.
A couple of weeks ago, a new person was brought to the dungeons.
