Rissa

As Rissa lay in the back of the van, drained of most of her blood, she studied the women around her, her gaze coming to rest on Keeva.

With strength from sheer determination, Rissa dragged herself next to her best friend then collapsed, exhausted.

Keeva looked down at her. “Geez, Rissa. Hate to say it, but you look like shit.”

A laugh burst from Rissa’s throat. “Sorry to say, you don’t look much better, Keeve,” she joked.

Keeva’s laughter quickly turned to a sob. Rissa pulled herself up awkwardly. Keeva untied her hands, then she gathered Keeva into her arms.

While Rissa had always been the strong one of the two, never letting the world get to her, Keeva had been the emotional one. Keeva let Rissa experience the human side of life that Rissa seldom let herself feel. In essence, Keeva was her other half, reminding Rissa that the world wasn’t always bad.

With Keeva in her arms, she rocked them both. “It’ll be okay, Keeve,” Rissa said.

“No, it won’t,” she sobbed. “You don’t know what they do to the women they capture. I don’t want to live.”

Rissa eyed the driver. If she could get to him, somehow make them crash, then the police would find them. In the dimness, her eyes met the driver’s in the rearview mirror. The gold circles around the black center dashed her hopes. If he was a shifter, there would be no way she could sneak up on him or have any strength over him.

They were not getting out of this. She let the hope she had die on the spot and squeezed Keeva closer to her. She needed to do some more thinking.

Rissa let her body relax against the van’s side wall. She watched the world go by through the front windshield. Recognizing the buildings, she knew exactly where they were. She’d driven these streets almost half her life, first as a teen, then as an officer of the law.

Maze’s face popped into her mind. A sad smile crossed her face. The man had been a nice surprise in her monotone life. She regretted chasing him away. Maybe she wouldn’t be in this predicament if she hadn’t.

What she would do if she could be on the island again. Talk about a paradise. She wondered how the place wasn’t on any map she’d ever seen. Certainly, Google would have it surveyed and online. Maybe Vivienne’s magic kept it hidden.

Rissa had never experienced magic before that moment. How her gun’s safety clicked on, even after she switched it off, was creepy. But it showed what kind of beings Vivienne and the shifters were. The woman used nonviolent means to subdue Rissa. Quick or Maze could’ve easily taken her down with a body blow, but instead, Vivienne simply deactivated the one device that could kill. The world could learn a lot from that group.

She was getting tired again. The adrenaline that fueled her to reach out to Keeva was draining. Her arms felt heavy and her body was dead weight.
