Chapter 34

Turin, Italy, Autumn 1985

On a sunny morning a week later Terry drives his Porsche into Italy along the Autostrada, his destination the Italian city of Turin. He is to meet a man who has the right connections to the Red Brigades. Three hours after leaving Monaco he parks his car in a side street off the Corso Swizzera and strolls casually along, checking unobtrusively for tails. After doubling back several times he is satisfied that he isn’t being followed. Terry walks another five hundred metres and enters a small park. Children are playing on playground equipment, watched over by mothers who are chatting to each other. He spots a man sitting on a park bench reading a newspaper. Terry sits down beside him and gives the correct code.

The man wastes no time in small talk. ‘You have a need for some assistance?’ he asks brusquely.

‘Yes’, replies Terry, ‘In San Remo, in the middle of next month. Can you help?’

‘Ah, San Remo’, the man smiles mirthlessly, ‘a good choice. We certainly can help. Did you know that many foreign military officers will attend a course there during that period? It will be the perfect cover for an incident. Afterwards when we claim the credit my friends can say they were after some military scalps, particularly if there is an American amongst them’.

‘That sounds excellent’, Terry says in a satisfied voice. ‘What happens next?’

The man’s expression grows serious. ‘There is the small matter of payment. Such things are not cheap.’ He provides Terry with a figure in Lire. ‘Half payable in a week if you agree; the balance on completion. If that is too expensive, too bad.’

Terry shakes his head. ‘No need. The sum and terms are acceptable.’ He knows Patrice Labelle will arrange to charge Smith the fee plus a goodly percentage on top. Patrice will facilitate the initial payment. Khashoggi will be none the wiser.

‘Bellissimo’, the man happily responds. ‘How do you want this man assassinated?’

‘What I want is for him to see me before he dies so that he knows it’s me, Terry snarls.

‘We need to minimise the exposure of our team if possible. We are down in numbers these days.’ The man looks glumly at Terry. ‘The movement has lost a lot of support over the past five years. We would prefer using a remotely detonated bomb. You would need to be far enough away so that you are not injured or killed.’

‘How far away?’ asks Terry.

‘If we use C-4 plastic explosive you should be protected by a wall or something similar, no closer than twenty metres away from the blast’.

‘That would work, although I would have liked to be much closer than that.’ Terry thinks for a moment. ‘The use of a hand gun is out of the question?’

The man looks regretful. ‘I’m afraid so. The target is not high enough profile for us to risk getting too close.’ The man regards Terry cunningly. ‘Of course, you could always do it yourself if you want to look him in the eye when he dies.
