Chapter Twenty-Six

Ashley was beyond frustrated. She had been working on the case for days now and she was no closer to solving it than she had been when she started. Every lead turned up a dead end, and she was starting to feel like she was going crazy. Even Melissa was losing patience with her over her obsession of finding Kirsty.

Ashley began to list everything she knew about Kirsty’s disappearance so far on a sheet of paper. She sighed deeply, feeling the weight of the case on her shoulders. She knew they were missing something, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

She wrote Lucy above Kirsty’s name.

‘Right, Amy said she saw her disappear when she reached the curve of the street. It took sixty seconds to reach the spot.’

She scribbled this down.

‘So she would’ve been near where Julian, Celia, and Sharon live. What else is there?’

Dale peeked over at Ashley’s notes. ‘That the only person known to be seen with her was Robert.’

Ashley wrote Robert’s name down and circled it.

‘So if we’re to deduce anything from this, it’s that out of the five of them, one of them could potentially know what happened to Kirsty.’ Ashley combed her fingers through her hair. ‘Ok, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for a moment and assume they’re all innocent. Their homes have been searched and no evidence of foul play was found.’

‘To be fair, the only one I don’t trust out of the lot of them is Robert.’

‘Why?’

‘‘Cause he’s got form. That’s good enough reason for me.’

‘But why take the risk knowing he’d be the number-one suspect?’ Ashley argued.

‘I don’t think he cares. He thinks he’s above the law.’

Ashley thought back to their previous interview and the fact Robert wet himself. This told her he would have admitted the truth about his involvement in Kirsty’s disappearance. He was all talk and very little else.

‘Ok, we won’t rule Robert out for now,’ Ashley said. ‘Let’s think about Kirsty herself …’

‘What if she was unhappy with Amy and wanted some space?’ Dale said. ‘She could’ve just run away, and if she did run away, there’s no telling where she could be.’

‘Everything’s a possibility at the moment. But where would she go?’ Ashley said.

Dale leant back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling. ‘What if Lucy’s hiding her?’

‘Nah, we’d have found her. They don’t have a basement or any outbuildings for her to hide in.’

‘What about her other friends?’

‘She would’ve had to get on a bus or some mode of public transport. CCTV would’ve picked her up and as we know there was no sign of her entering or exiting her street.’

‘What about the kidnap theory?’

‘Ok, let’s think about that. What’s the usual motive for kidnapping a child?’ Ashley said more to herself than Dale as she began to pace the floor. ‘Child abuse, right? All known sex offenders in the area have been spoken to and have solid alibis.’

‘That doesn’t leave us with much else.’

‘Unless it’s a sex offender who hasn’t been caught yet.
