Chapter Fifty-three

Angela

Angela watches Lisa walk down the path and onto the road. There’s going to be trouble: it’s the thought going through her mind over and over again during their short conversation. And now she feels Stephen standing behind her.

‘What did she want?’ He lights a cigarette.

‘Nothing. Just checking I, we, were okay.’

He doesn’t believe her; she knows by the scowl. She’s been tiptoeing around him since her mum’s funeral. He’s been in one of his moods for days. Now her skin crawls in readiness.

‘Pull the other one.’ Stephen grabs hold of Angela’s wrist.

She looks at his hand, the carefully manicured nails that cut into her skin. She tries hard not to show he’s hurting her but fails. He grins when she winces.

‘It’s just that Mother’s left a will.’

‘A will?’ With the cigarette in the corner of his mouth, he speaks through tight lips. ‘And?’

‘She asked if I wanted to go with her and Dad to find out about it. Some solicitor, Banner and Banner on Whitworth Street in Barnsgate.’

‘You do.’ It isn’t a question. ‘You will go. When?’

‘Friday, eleven o’clock. I can’t see the point, Stephen. Whatever is in it, I’ll … we’ll find out soon enough.’

‘The point, you stupid bitch, is, we know what’s in it: that land, that farty little bit of land she had no use for but knew I wanted − needed. That you were supposed to get for me. But like everything else, you were bloody useless. I need to know what happens now. So think on, you’re going.’

He takes the cigarette from his lips, holds it between his thumb and forefinger. She can see he’s thinking of stabbing it into her arm. He breathes heavily. ‘Not worth the fucking effort.’ He turns away. Angela doesn’t watch him leave.

She remembers the first time he’d sent her to ask her mother about that plot of land. ‘Ask’ wasn’t the right word; Stephen had demanded that she tell Eve to sell it to him and Moorland Investments. She’d known she was treading on thin ice as soon as the words came out of her mouth.
