Eleven

Sandra walked from the studio more exhilarated than she’d felt in years. Dancing each morning for hours left her rejuvenated and exhausted all at once.

Sister Akira had tested her knowledge the first three days, forcing her to dig deep in her repertoire, but when Akira got winded the third day, Sandra had earned her respect.

For the next week Sandra danced with the company as a guest, but she was asked to contribute today and that made her day.

Each day she tried to understand Lola better as she watched her interact with Brian. Lola’s admission made Sandra question everything she’d ever done for her. And although a part of Sandra wanted to hate her, she couldn’t. But she was honest with herself.

Sandra didn’t know if she could ever love Lola the same.

Walking home that evening, Sandra saw Brian and Randy from a distance with Randy explaining the finer points of bike riding. She couldn’t help but smile as the big man pretended to ride the small two-wheeler, with training wheels.

She missed Brian, but having free time was like having a succulent treat after dinner. Sandra waved at the pair when Brian took off and ran to her.

“Auntie, where have you been?”

“Sightseeing, you nosy little boy. What are you up to?”

“Randy’s teaching me to ride my bike.” His happy gaze roamed her. “I missed you today.”

Sandra bent and hugged the little boy she loved so much. “I’ve missed you, too. Let’s play tomorrow, okay?”

“Deal.”

“Where’s your mommy?”

“Resting on the couch. She ran out of gas.”

“Did not, you tattler,” Lola said affectionately from the house. “Come in, Sandra. Let Randy have his turn wearing him out. I’m pooped.”

Sandra deposited her dance gear on the stairs and sat across from her sister in the living room.

“Where’ve you been?” Lola asked.

Sandra drew back, smiling. “Out. Why?”

“You got here two weeks ago and I never see you anymore. Where do you go, Sandra, when you sneak out early in the morning with your secret bag?”

Sandra laughed. “None of your business.”

Lola’s mouth fell open. “Have you met someone?”

“No.”

“Good, ’cause you need to be getting with Mark. I don’t know what your problem is, but in case you can’t see, he’s fine.”

“Thank you, Lola, for the rundown on Mark Turner. However”—she blinked and was intentionally evasive—“he’s out of town, so I can’t see him.”

“Then what are you doing at his house every day?”

“Are you spying on me?” Sandra relaxed, enjoying this different relationship with her sister.

“No, I just saw you coming out one day and I wondered. So—” She waited expectantly. “What are you doing over there?”

Sandra stood. “Watering his plants. I need a shower. Be down soon.”

Lola scratched on a list. “Take your time. All I know is that Mark doesn’t have any plants, but that’s our little secret. I swear,” Lola mumbled to herself. “It’s hard being the responsible one.”

Sandra snickered, her legs protesting as she climbed the stairs.

“Lola, get out here and help me teach this boy to ride,” Randy called.

“Coming!”

Sandra walked into the bathroom and laughed out loud.
