Twenty-Five

There was something very James Bond about the way Harlan made quick work of removing the hard drive, a rectangular sliver of the box housed beneath a 24-inch flat-screen monitor.

He held it into view. “Shouldn’t take too long.”

Down the hall came the click-click of heels.

“Expecting anyone?” he asked.

Della appeared in the doorway. Her mere presence charged the air with scrutiny. “Saw Lark’s car outside and assumed you were accepting company. The front door was open.” She pushed her silky hair back, her eyes scouring every square inch of that office.

Did you put a tracking device on Lark’s car to notify you if it came within twenty yards of my house, Della? “This is Lark’s brother, Harlan,” I said. “He’s visiting from Colorado.”

He stood to offer his hand.

“Della Betancourt.” She gave his hand a solid shake and stared as he returned to the computer’s keyboard.

“He’s helping me with a computer problem,” I said.

“All you had to do was ask, Sis. Jared’s a computer guru.”

“Got everything I need,” Harlan said. “I’ll call when I . . . when it’s . . . fixed. Nice meeting you. I’ll let myself out.” He flashed a quick smile and disappeared.

Della was still gawking at the computer when my phone rang and Crashman appeared on the screen.

“Need to get that?” she asked.

I shook my head and punched a button on the side of my phone, sending the call to voicemail.

“What’s wrong with your computer?”

“Can’t access our old email account,” I said. “Who knows what bills are coming due?”

“How’d he get involved?” she asked.

“He brought cinnamon rolls—want one?”

“Eech. All those carbs.”

“What do you have against carbs?”

“Since Josie destroyed my metabolism.” She moved to the windows and peered out as Harlan pulled away.

I moved toward the door. “What brought you to my end of town?”

She followed me. “Meeting with the owners of that ginormous house on Quaker. I think I’m getting the listing.” She sighed. “Had a few minutes to check in on you.”

After a spell of bland small talk, she left for her meeting. She seemed a little wounded—but I’d survived our encounter with my self-respect intact.
