Chapter Seven

Mishka groaned softly, trying to figure out why his side ached so badly.

“Mishka?”

Hearing his name spoken softly, questioningly, in that sweet voice, Mishka recalled it all. His lips curved into a smile even as he attempted to get his eyelids to open. Humming, he swallowed once, twice, struggling to get moisture to his throat.

“Here.”

Mishka felt something slide under the back of his head and lift it. He was about to try to question it when he felt something teasing at his lips.

“Open. It’s water.”

Obeying Aramis’s command, Mishka opened his mouth. He managed to pry his eyelids open just as cool fluid flowed across his lower lip and tongue. Swallowing convulsively, he enjoyed the soothing quality.

Mishka managed a couple more mouthfuls before Aramis pulled the cup away. Licking his lips, he lifted his right hand, having to pull it out from under the covers. With the way the pain radiated through his left side, he didn’t bother moving that arm. Mishka knew from past experience that it would just make it worse.

After Mishka had rubbed the gummies from his eyes, his vision finally cleared properly so he could focus. He swept his gaze around the space and immediately recognized his room at the rented estate.

Right. I passed out in the SUV... after the most wonderful kiss.

Looking right, Mishka spotted a very pensive-looking Aramis sitting in a chair beside the bed. With the way the fingers in his left hand were balled into a loose fist, coupled with the hint of pain etched around his eyes, Mishka realized Aramis had used his bad hand to lift his head.

My poor little one. I’m supposed to be taking care of him, not the other way around.

“Thank you for the water,” Mishka began slowly. It suddenly hit his sluggish pain-muddled mind that he hadn’t actually asked permission for that kiss in the car. “Are you okay?”

Aramis nibbled his bottom lip as he nodded slowly. “Yeah.” His brows furrowed as he cocked his head. “Doctor Trystan said you would be fine in a couple days, but I saw the hole when he dug out the bullet.” Shaking his head, Aramis claimed, “That shouldn’t be possible. So how?”

Mishka didn’t think Aramis was ready for this conversation, yet, but he had made an agreement with the man. He owed him his part of the bargain. Nodding slowly, he kept close watch on Aramis’s features as he told him, “You’re right. It’s not possible... for a human.”

Aramis furrowed his brows, seeming to roll those words around in his mind. After a moment where Mishka waited with his heart thudding wildly in his chest, his mate smirked at him. “A-Are you saying you’re, uh, you’re not, um, human?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you,” Mishka replied, keeping his voice soft and soothing. “I’m telling you that humans are not alone on this planet.”

“Soooo—” Aramis paused, scowling. “You’re an alien? Like, from outer space?”

“Not at all.” Mishka paused, deciding he didn’t want to have the conversation while lying down—well, not unless he had Aramis curled up with him.
