Alma had insisted that I finish up the edits for one of the new songs, and I stayed down in the studio well past when I would usually be done for the day. I had my mind on a nice cold beer, and maybe some pizza, but all of that fled when I got to the kitchen.
Jackson stood at a beautifully set table, food steaming on my pretty clear glass plates while he stood there looking at me, nerves writ large on his handsome face. My eyes dropped down his body, and I realized his shirt was open. I opened my mouth to ask him what he was doing, and then I saw the scars that peeked across one side of his ribcage.
âHi,â he said quietly. âJoin me?â
I swallowed, staring at everything, hardly knowing where to look first. He pulled out my chair, and I went to it and sat down on autopilot. When he sat down, his shirt shifted, and I could see more marks along his torso. âJackson, what is this?â I asked softly.
âAn explanation, an apology, and⦠a request for another chance,â Jackson said, looking me in the eye. âI didnât mean to make you feel like I just wanted to get you to bed. I like you. Really, really like you. When you asked why I hadnât gotten undressed, I didnât know how to answer that because I hadnât shown anyone my body since I got home. I panicked and handled it badly.â He pulled in a deep breath, eyes roaming the table as he collected his thoughts. âI was injured the same day Ben was killed. Iâm okay, but it left a lot of scars. I donât like them. Theyâre an inescapable reminder of that day. No one has seen them that I didnât have to show them to. I donât know why I thought you wouldnât think it was strange that I kept my clothes on. I didnât think about it. I was focused on you.â He looked into my eyes again. âI want to show you because I donât want to miss this chance with you.â
My mouth was open as I listened to Jacksonâs explanation, and my heart melted. âOhâ¦â I said softly. âJacksonâ¦â I stood up and went to him, dropping to kneel on the floor to kiss him the way he had kissed me a week before.
His arms circled my upper back, and I melted into him as he took the kiss I gave him. His mouth was still closed, still staying within the boundaries I had placed for him, and suddenly, I wanted him more than I had ever wanted anything in my life. I opened my mouth and licked at his lips, and he met me at every soft stroke. His legs parted, and I pressed against him, our arms tight around each other. âIâm sorry,â I said when I came up for air. âIâm sorry I didnât let you explain. God noâ¦â
Jacksonâs hand was cradling the back of my neck, his fingertips kneading gently, while his other hand stroked up and down my back.
