Brooke

Kevin, who’d disappeared for a few minutes to say hi to an old friend, returned to Brooke’s side and gestured at a woman approaching them. “Have you met Vanessa yet?”

The beautiful woman took Kevin’s seat as he offered it to her. She introduced herself, immediately commanding attention in that natural way only the rare few people can without coming across as overbearing.

But even Vanessa could only capture Brooke’s attention for a brief second. Brooke couldn’t help glancing back at Sage and her friend from time to time while the gorgeous woman beside her spoke.

Kevin, assuming his apparent matchmaking work was done, stepped away to have a conversation with his little sister Emily, who he’d introduced earlier. She was fresh-faced, bright-eyed, and in her mid-twenties. How she hadn’t been gobbled up and spit out already by this city was another plus for New Orleans as far as Brooke was concerned.

Or maybe it just spoke to Kevin’s sister’s good luck.

Brooke tried so hard to focus on the woman in front of her. This is what she’d come here for. To meet someone. Anyone.

But her attention kept drifting back to someone she already knew.

She’d managed to stay away all night. Somehow. Heaven help her, it wasn’t for lack of wanting to walk over there. It had taken every ounce of willpower she had to stay in her seat and talk to Kevin’s friend Vanessa, who was obviously flirting with Brooke now.

It would be so easy to flirt back. To leave the bar with her. To forget about all the things Brooke couldn’t have.

So easy.

And yet… impossible.

“Sooo do you have plans after this?”

That got Brooke’s attention.

“Plans?” she said, buying herself an extra moment or two.

“I was wondering if you might want to get out of here,” Vanessa said, dropping her voice lower. “With me?”

“Um, I’d better not,” Brooke said. “I’ve got an early morning. I should head out soon, anyway.”

Fuck.

What was wrong with her?

The rejection didn’t seem to faze Vanessa, however. She gave a sly smile and said, “Another time maybe. Can I give you my number?”

Brooke felt a flutter in her stomach that she couldn’t tell was interest or queasiness.

What the ever-loving-fuck was wrong with her?

The woman was stunning. Sharp features. A perfect blonde pixie cut. And a low-cut white T-shirt.

Dammit.

“Yeah, definitely.” She dug her phone from her back pocket and handed it to Vanessa who then typed her number into Brooke’s contacts.

She might be an idiot tonight, but that didn’t mean she had to be an idiot forever.

“Nice meeting you, Brooke. See you around.”

Brooke watched as she slid off the barstool and disappeared into the crowd that had grown quite a bit over the last hour.

“Everything okay with you?” Kevin asked over the noise of the bar. He took the now empty seat beside her and waited for the answer she didn’t have.

“Not really, it turns out.”

“I thought you wanted to come out? Meet people?” Keven raised an eyebrow at the group leaving the bar. “Vanessa was definitely people. And definitely into you.
