Chapter Ten

I barely made it inside the side door of the house and to the stairs when my mother happened upon me, her eyes wide and her posture frantic. Great, I thought. She found the pillows. But when she saw me, a smile broke across her face and she rushed over.

“Oh good,” she said. “You’re up. What are you wearing? Nevermind. I just had the most brilliant idea!”

Though confused, I glanced up the stairs. I just wanted a shower. Maybe a nap. At the very least breakfast. I wanted to thank Shelly for letting us use her kitchen, though I wasn’t all that hungry after that drive home. “What’s this oh-so-brilliant idea?” I asked, knowing I could go nowhere until she told me all about it.

“We’re going to have a party!”

I groaned. How many parties would I have to attend before she gave up on me? “When?” I asked. I wanted to know how long I had to prepare myself mentally. And emotionally.

“Tomorrow night!”

Was she serious? I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh at her own terrible joke. My mother was not very spontaneous, and she was even less so when it involved other people seeing her home. Everything had to be perfect, and sometimes she spent months planning even the smallest events. The fact that she’d never mentioned a word of this meant it was a very recent idea.

“Wait,” I said. “Tomorrow night? Like, Friday night? No one will even come!” Most likely, everyone on my mother’s list would have already had plans.

But Mother still grinned, grabbing my hand and dragging me toward the kitchen. “Nonsense,” she said. “People always come if you invite the right ones.”

Ah. That only made me worry more. “And, uh, who did you invite?”

“Everyone, of course.” She forced me down onto a stool, and within twenty seconds Shelly had a plate of pancakes in front of me and a look that said I had better start eating before she made me eat, though there was also a bit of a glimmer in her dark eyes. I wondered if Adam had told the chef anything about last night, and my heart picked up its pace.

That was not something I needed.

After three bites that mostly just made me queasy, I turned back to my mother. “And who is everyone?” I asked, though I was pretty sure I could name at least two of the guests. Everyone else was just filler, people to make the party seem less like the terrible scheme it was.

“Oh,” my mother said as she pulled out her phone and typed away. “Most of the usual people. The Fosters are back in town. Selena Pye, you like her. Oh, and the Munroes, of course.”

There it was. “You’re just trying to force Adam and me together,” I said, scowling. Shelly glared at me from the other side of the kitchen, so I took another bite before she decided to start force feeding me. She had threatened to do so more than once over the years, and she was not someone I wanted to fight against.
