Once again, Ted lay upon the ground with Mia beside him. He turned and looked into her large green eyes. “How many times will I have this dream of you dying?”

“Until I die,” she answered.

“Why am I having it? Is it an omen?”

“You don’t believe in such things, Ted,” Mia said and let her head rest on his chest. They looked up at the sky. “I think it’s up to you to figure out why I’m going to die and how to stop it.”

“You have a lot of faith in me, Minnie Mouse.”

“I have never lost faith in you, Teddy Bear.”

“Why do you become ash?” Ted asked.

Mia lifted her hand until it blocked the sun from her eyes. “You’ll have to ask my shadow,” Mia said.

Ted watched as her hand fell to ash first, then her arm, and as if each cell was a domino, she turned to ash. The last thing to go was her heart. He grabbed it with both of his hands.

“My heart beats only for you,” Mia’s voice whispered in the wind before her heart too became ashes.

Ted’s screams never reached the waking world, but they did out-volume Screaming Beth’s.
