Mika
I stared at him. He was just as loving and caring as I imagined he could be. It was beautiful. David tickled Keylan playfully on his chin. They looked like the perfect pair. Separating them would be like pulling gum off of a shoe. My palms grew sweaty with the thoughts on my mind. I had been quiet the entire visit and yet when I looked at my phone texting Ox that everything was still okay, I realized I had only been there with David for thirty minutes.
“Aye, so when you gon’ make a decision? It seems like you wanna string me along so you can have your cake and eat it too with this fun boy.” David startled me out of my texting daze.
“David, shit is not that simple anymore. Things have changed for you and me. We can’t just bounce back to what we used to be.”
“You playing games, Mika. Why not?”
He just didn’t get it. It was hard for him to understand why I was unable to just forgive him and move on like nothing ever happened. It was my own fault. He was so used to me pacifying his feelings and forgetting about my own that he couldn’t see past me forgiving him and coming home. David stared into my yes blankly patiently awaiting my response. I swear I wish I didn’t have to give him one.
“Because neither you nor I are the same person anymore. We are different in so many ways now and we’ve basically grown apart. You should just focus on being a great father to Keylan because he adores you.” I searched his face to see if my attempt to throw his mind more on his son rather than me worked. “We can co-parent and be cordial to each other. And, I won’t even bitch if you have him around Bridgette. I know she’ll take good care of him.”
“Man, you know this shit is foul right? For weeks you’ve been stringing me along with this nice shit like you actually gave a damn about me, like you were still in love with me. Don’t you love me, Mika?”
“You know I do. Of course, I do. Don’t do that.”
“Then why aren’t we back together already? You said you’re not fucking him meaning you’re not all wrapped up in his ass. So what is it?” David asked before sitting back in his seat slouching slowly stroking his chin. “Oh. Now I see. It’s deeper than that between you two. You’re not fucking him but you’re catching feelings for him. Is that it?”
“David, I can’t just bounce back to what it used to be. And, it’s more complicated than that—“
“No it’s not. You love me but you’re falling in love with him. It makes perfect sense. It explains why you’re not home yet.” His eyes searched the floor. “Now, I know. I wish you had told me from jump before you had me begging to get you back for weeks.”
“David, I didn’t mean to—“
“Naw, it’s cool.
