As she’s getting out of the bathtub, she catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror. It makes her do a double-take. That can’t be her.

She finishes rubbing herself with the towel and looks at her body again. Jesus, she’s getting thick at the middle. She looks like a fucking pig.

Because her old scale is the wrong colour for the room, she keeps it stashed away in the cupboard under the bathroom sink. It’s heavy, and awkward to dislodge, but she persists and drags it out of its place. She sets it on the floor and steps on it.

Shedding the towel she has wrapped around her wet hair doesn’t make even a pound of difference. This is disgusting. She is sure she isn’t pregnant. She’d had her period – when exactly – three weeks ago? Had it been more? How can she weigh this much? What the hell has happened to her? Has getting married done something to her, has it made her think she can just let herself go?

When she tries pushing the scale back into the cupboard, she manages to scratch a gouge into the finish on the inside of the door. With another heave she shoves it back into the dark where it belongs. Not only is she getting fat, she’s starting to think in terms of all those stupid magazines. The ones she has to look at every day beside her check-stand. The ones she has to restock, it seems, continuously. The ones that tell their readers how to keep their hubbies happy. Are their stories that contagious? Can their inanities be getting to her? Is she really turning into the Fat Canadian Housewife?

She gets into her uniform, makes herself an egg and toast. Then she throws the food away and marches out the door.
