In 1944 my father was operated on in Toronto for an appendicitis under local anaesthetic. He said it was unpleasant, but there was an attractive nurse mopping his brow while they rummaged in his belly, so he bore up. He then had a period of sick leave while he recuperated, so he took himself by train to New York.

New York in 1944 must have been exciting for a young man who liked jazz and played a bit of jazz piano. He told us much later in life that he had missed his calling and should have been a jazz musician, but he said it to my mother’s mingled fury and mockery, and didn’t really get a chance to develop the idea. Whatever the reason, from New York he had no stories he was willing to share. Perhaps he just wandered around apologetic and bewildered, agog at the sight of a vertical city, an outsider with a pain in his side.
