The startled ball of fur darted into the forest.

"Dad gum. I missed him. Dad gum, dad gum, dad gum."

Matt clapped him on the shoulder. "Maybe so, but not by much. Now get your spear and load up again. Might see something else down here."

The next two snares held rabbits but the last three only the remains. Matt quickly tossed the bloody fur away and reset the snares, knowing that whatever creature had eaten the rabbits would return. It had found three easy meals, and whatever it was it would not forget.

Joe examined the partially eaten bodies. "What do you figure ate them?"

"Look" Matt pointed to the pugmarks in the snow. "See the four-clawed toes and the heel that looks like a triangle?"

"What made them?"

"Could be fox or coyote. From the size, I'd guess coyote. Come on. Let's see where our little bandit is going." Matt followed the trail of the hungry little thief.

The trail paralleled the meandering creek. After a mile or so, Joe gasped, "Look at that" He pointed across the creek to a steep bluff, its face covered with a thick layer of vines.

Matt studied the bluff warily. It was over a quarter of a mile long and at least a hundred feet high. The coyote tracks led directly to the face of the bluff and disappeared into a small cave.
