Carrie was nestled next to the fireplace when she heard Anthony drive up. She placed her book aside and drank the rest of her hot tea. A few minutes later, after the horse was secured in the stable, she heard the back door open, accompanied by a puff of cold wind. She pulled her afghan tighter and looked up with a smile. “Welcome home, dea—”

Pushing the afghan aside, she leapt to her feet. “Minnie!” she cried, rushing forward to inspect the little girl her husband was holding so tenderly. “Are you hurt?”

“No,” Anthony said quietly, reaching down to push a stray lock of hair from Minnie’s face. “She’s not hurt.”

Carrie stared from Anthony’s face to Minnie’s, finally recognizing the shocked look of pain and loss. “What happened?” she murmured. Minnie just stared at her and then shrank back against Anthony’s chest as she closed her eyes tightly.

“I’m going to take her upstairs.”

“Put her in bed with Frances,” Carrie replied. “She needs to be close to someone.”

Anthony nodded. “I’ll be back once I have her settled.”
