I used to think, ‘Wouldn’t it be lovely if there was something that was healthy and came in a handy package so I could eat it really quickly?’ Then I realised that thing already exists, and it’s called a banana, so I always have one of those to hand, too.
The amount I eat has also changed. Steve is a brilliant cook but he has no concept of portion control. He’ll pile our plates high with food and I could eat the lot without giving it a second thought, so it’s up to me to be sensible and not overeat. I also eat more slowly nowadays, which makes it much easier to know when I’ve had enough.
What has worked for me, long term, is combining eating well with doing exercise that I love. It’s so basic it almost feels too easy. No more weighing food, furtively checking the back of packets for the calories and fat content or skipping meals. Why didn’t someone tell me about this when I was 16?!
To be 60 and be in the best shape of my life feels incredible, and while I think exercise is something we all need to do, please don’t take that to mean that you have to start training for a marathon tomorrow. Start small; go for a little walk, put on your favourite music and dance about in your living room, run up and down the stairs a few times. Do some squats in front of the TV. Try an online yoga tutorial. Do anything that will get you up off the sofa and help you to feel better. If you’re lucky enough to come across an instructor like Maxine who makes every class a joy, then even better.
Exercising has obviously helped me to tone up, get the unhealthy weight off and keep it off, but even more importantly it’s helped my head. You just feel better when you exercise. It’s almost like giving your brain a clear-out and getting rid of all the toxic thoughts. It’s a way of hoovering out your insecurities and anxieties.
Just going for a walk improves my mood. Most of us are within walking distance of a park, and getting out in the fresh air is so good for the soul. Start with a small stroll and go from there.
If I’m on my own I will often phone friends for a chat and a catch-up when I’m out and about with Angus, and the time flies by. I’ll look down at my watch and I can’t believe how long I’ve been going for. Walk with someone whose company you enjoy and you’ll be surprised how quickly time passes. I guarantee you’ll be on a high when you get back home.
