Chapter Sixteen

“Um, hello there,” I nervously greeted the lady at the front desk. “I’m Ellen. I’m supposed to meet with Dr. Ellison at three o’clock today. Sorry I’m a little early, but I was close by and I don’t really have anywhere else to go right now.”

She smiled warmly at me and her kind blue eyes seemed to welcome me in. “Of course, Ellen. Dr. Ellison has been expecting you,” she said. “He had a cancelation in the time slot before yours, so I might be able to get you in early. Does that sound okay?”

I smiled softly back at her and quietly responded with, “Yes, thank you.”

And with that, she led me to the waiting room in the back, set me up with a few magazines, a bottle of water, and the remote to the small television hanging from the wall, and left me to resume her post at the front desk. Uninterested in the midafternoon soap operas and the old issues of Reader Digest that had been unloaded on me, I started taking note of my surroundings, thinking it could distract me enough to keep my mind off Baby. The last way I wanted to start this meeting was weeping in the waiting room before it even started. Though I’m sure the doctor had seen much stranger things in his work, I was committed to keeping my composure for as long as possible.

Looking around the room, I could tell that great care and attention were put into creating the least exciting design they could. I suppose when you regularly meet with people in emotional distress, couples whose relationship is in turmoil, or patients who have trouble controlling their impulses, you’d want to create an environment as soothing as possible.

The walls were coated in a light muted purple, adorned with small accent paintings of flowers. In the corner, a small water fountain was trickling—it was the round kind, where the water comes out from the top with just enough pressure to perfectly cover the orb. Mom used to have one in her garden when I was growing up. Sometimes, I would stick my finger in the top just to figure out where all that water was coming from, then Mom would yell for me to stop, saying something like, “You’re going to get caught in that thing and have to live the rest of your life stuck to a water fountain! Is that what you want?”

I smiled and chuckled to myself as I looked around. It was like every element of the waiting room was yelling at me to calm down. Maybe they just wanted you to wait until your session clock was running before unleashing your feelings. I couldn’t imagine that would be much fun for Dr. Ellison.

I suddenly heard a soft knocking sound coming from down the hall. Looking over my shoulder, I spotted Dr. Ellison poking his head out from his office. He came over to greet me, his large and rugged hands enveloping mine in a handshake.
