The Ride

“Get some sleep. ” said the friar, “ Tomorrow we must

See Lestrade and divulge what we know, though I trust

You will not let him know that this night you had slunk

To the pubs of Whitechapel dressed up as a drunk. ”

“That’s today, ” added Watson, “ It soon will be dawn

And, if you are like me, you’ll be starting to yawn.

So we must get more kip for the dawning well may

Be the start of a trying and troublesome day. ”

Off to sleep went the trio, Sherlock stretching out

On the well-depressed sofa, still thinking about

What might lay before them when dawn finally broke.

For the first time in days Holmes had no need to smoke.

Having breakfasted early, the trio emerged

And, onto a four-wheeler, they quickly converged

And demanded the cabbie should find Scotland Yard

Without talk or delay - “ Get your team running hard. ”

On the cold streets of London, the cab made its way

Through the mad crush of wagons determined to stay

On their well-travelled courses to market and dock-

Scotland Yard came in view as it struck eight o’clock.

“Well done, My Good Fellow. A guinea you’ll earn

If you stand here and wait while we go in and learn

What we must be about. Very soon we’ll have need, ”

Sherlock said to the cabbie, “ of daring and speed. ”

“I’ll wait. ” said the cabbie, “ My team needs a rest

After racing through London - they’ll be at their best,

These two horses of mine - they’ll be rested and fed

And be willing to run till their sides run with red. ”

“Good Man. ” shouted Holmes, “ Half a Crown on account

And a good many more you’ll be able to count

When your horses are stabled this day, after dark. ”

Sherlock threw him the coin without further remark.

The cabbie stepped down as the trio walked on

Through the Scotland Yard gate and inside, whereupon

They would seek out Lestrade and tell him of their news

And discuss what was learned and their relevant views.

Bert the Cabbie, meanwhile, thought it time to proceed

Fitting nosebags he always kept filled up with feed

Over each horse’s nose - every horse has to eat,

And so Bert’s well-fed horses were given a treat.

Bert would let them chew oats, a full portion for each,

Till the nosebags were empty and then he would reach

And remove them and place them away and then guide

Both to water the nearest horse-trough could provide.

As each horse drank its fill, Bert remarked to the pair

That, “ The fellow who paid us, the one with the flair,

Was none other than he, Sherlock Holmes, on a case

So I think, My Two Friends, we are in for a chase. ”

Bert knew well such a client might want him to stand

Just ten minutes or so or, perhaps, might demand

A full hour or more - his reward would be such

That a cabbie like him would not care very much.

With his team of two horses all watered and fed,

Bert saw where in the street he could wait, so he led

Them to where they’d be seen, just not too far away,

For he knew that, such clients, he could not delay.
