Chapter Fifteen
“Is there not anymore that we can do today to assist Miss Hill?” I asked. “It goes against the grain to be doing nothing while she is in mortal peril.”
“Please be assured old chap, she is, as I have said, perfectly safe for now. But I fear I have may have brought the wrath of Mrs. Heidler upon the both of us, notwithstanding your budding romance with the good lady.”
“Really, Holmes, there is no romance, budding or otherwise,” I protested.
“Watson, my observational skills are second to none, even though I say so myself and my deductions on this occasion are correct in spite of your protestations to the contrary.”
“Well, as you say, Holmes,” I admitted, “I do feel as though there may be a burgeoning romance. I am certainly enraptured by Beatrice, but I have to be sure in my own mind that she appreciates such attentions and that my regard for her is not borne out of the fact she resembles Mary so.”
“There can be no doubt in my mind, my friend, that she welcomes your attentions, the other matter, alas, I cannot answer for you,” Holmes said kindly.
“I have to confess that I have suffered pangs of guilt over my feelings for her. It is not that long ago when it was Mary that merited all my attention and love.”
“I feel sure, my dear fellow, that Mrs. Watson would wish you to continue your life and love again, knowing that the love you had for her will never die. I think you have much to offer a wife, Watson.”
“Perhaps so, Holmes, perhaps so, thank you for your kind words, but I cannot allow myself to think about the future while we have this grim business to attend to.”
The forecast Holmes had ventured of the reception we would encounter when we returned to Mrs. Heidler’s proved to be correct. Beatrice was standing in the parlour, arms folded, looking most formidable.
“Gentlemen, I must ask you to leave.”
“Beatrice...” I started.
“No, John, do not say a word, this is already difficult enough for me. I have just come from the police house where they have Nathaniel on a false charge. I come from a proud family, never was there any hint of trouble with the police and Nathaniel has been brought up to be God-fearing and honest. Within a little over two days of your arrival here, he has been placed in danger by you Mr. Holmes, by his delivery of a note concocted between the two of you and now finds himself under arrest. I will not allow such things to happen.”
“Mrs. Heidler, Dr. Watson has to be absolved of blame, the missive was a concoction of my own which the good doctor kindly put his name to in order that the note should be read and acted upon. It is I alone who have brought this calamity on you, but I believe I can yet rectify this situation.”
“And because of that note,” she continued, as if Holmes had not spoken, “Nathaniel is under lock and key.
