CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Jilly read her shopping list out loud on the way back to the farm. Keats mumbled an objection about stopping at the grocery store at a time like this, but weâd promised to help. It was a condition of our chef going with us to see Ronan and Gemini. There were a lot of mouths to feed and more coming.
When my phone buzzed, he gave a mumble of relief.
When Jillyâs buzzed, that turned into a pant-laugh.
And when our phones buzzed another half dozen times apiece, he threw back his head and yipped for the sheer joy of it.
A Butter Tart 911 outranked grocery shopping and just about anything else, short of an emergency hospital stay.
âUh-oh,â Jilly said, as I made a U-turn and headed back towards Daisyâs house. âWeâre going to have some hungry guests.â
When my family gathered for a meeting like this, there were bigger problems to worry about. âNo one at Runaway Inn ever starves, Jilly. Maybe my grandparents can run into town.â
That wasnât an option, as it turned out, because my grandfatherâs white head loomed over the refrigerator, where he was sharing Asherâs customary spot with my weary-looking brother. Gardenia was sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by Poppy, Iris and Violet. Mom, of course, was on her stool at the counter, planting waxy lipstick prints in her signature red on a white mug. The fact that Daisy had forgotten to use the patterned china designated for Momâs use was a key indicator of my clean freak sisterâs state of mind.
âWhoâs overseeing the guests?â I asked, as Keats pranced ahead of us into the kitchen. Percy had already departed to track down my nephewsâ ferrets.
Daisy pumped her spray bottle of vinegar cleanser at the counter and scrubbed the already-gleaming surface with a shammy. âMom said Kellan took care of it.â
My eyes darted suspiciously to my brother and he managed a wink. âAre you serious? Travis Wigg is in my home like he owns it?â
âHeâs been in the house before, Ivy.â Poppyâs voice was grating. âKellan wouldnât put him in charge if he didnât trust him, would he?â
âNow, now darlings,â Mom purred, smoothing her red satin skirt. âNo one likes a shrew.â
Poppy set her mug down with a deliberate clatter. âIvyâs got a problem with Travis and I donât understand it. If Kellan likes him, isnât that enough?â
I leaned on the end of the counter since Jilly had taken the last seat at the table. âKellan and I donât agree on everyone.â
âTrue that,â Asher said. âEdna Evans for starters. He doesnât trust her, but he does trust Travis. Is your marriage in peril before itâs even official?â
âAsh, stop.â Jillyâs tone left no room for dispute. âWhy are we here when a rowdy young band is performing to an audience of one? I hope Travis likes searing guitar solos.â
âHe does,â Poppy muttered. âWe love live music.â
I raised my hand. âI know why weâre here. To do an intervention to save Poppy from a grave mistake.â
My sister started to stand but Gardenia pushed her down.
