Chapter Six

When he returned home, Shayde stood at the side of his bed, watching Zach sleep. Shayde had gone to the clubhouse, ready to kill every last person there, just to keep this slip of a man safe. There had to be more to his feelings than lust. Shayde wouldn’t have done that for anyone else. He wouldn’t have put his life on the line for someone he simply wanted to fuck.

If Zach wasn’t his mate, then the guy must have cast a powerful spell on him. Nothing else explained why he felt so strongly about the human. No other explanation could account for why he had such an overpowering desire to keep him safe.

If only Shayde believed in such things as casting spells.

Zach stirred, and his eyes fluttered open. He looked up at Shayde and smiled. The genuine look of happiness on Zach’s face that Shayde was there clenched Shayde’s heart for this man.

He undressed and slipped into bed, pulling Zach to him. Shayde’s only intention was to get some sleep, but feeling Zach’s warm palm on his chest unraveled something inside of him.

It was a feeling he hadn’t experienced in a long time. His walls crumbled, crumbling along with the tough exterior he wore like a badge of honor. He was vulnerable and open, and he knew it was all because of Zach. The human’s touch was gentle, his fingers tracing Shayde’s skin.

“I’m glad you’re back,” Zach murmured, his voice sleepy and content.

Shayde felt his chest swell with emotion at the simple words. He didn’t know what it was about Zach, but being around him made Shayde feel like he was part of something bigger than himself. Zach’s presence filled the room, and Shayde couldn’t help but be drawn to it.

As they lay there, Zach wrapped in his arms, Shayde realized that this was it. This was what he wanted. He wanted to protect Zach, keep him safe, and love him in every way possible. He wanted to be there for him for all eternity.

It was a scary thought, one that made Shayde’s heart race and sweat bead on his forehead. But at the same time, it was a freeing thought. For the first time in Shayde’s life, he felt like he had a purpose.

He didn’t know how it happened or when it happened, but Zach had become his everything. He could feel it in his bones, in the way his body reacted to Zach’s touch. He knew he would go to the ends of the earth for this man, give up everything, just to be by his side.

It was a feeling that was both overwhelming and beautiful, and Shayde wanted to hold on to it forever. He had been Eleazar’s second-in-command for centuries, had seen and done things that most people couldn’t even imagine. But nothing had ever felt like this. Nothing had ever felt as important as keeping Zach safe and by his side.

Zach shifted in his arms, causing Shayde to tighten his hold. He pressed a kiss to the top of Zach’s head, and the human snuggled even closer.
