Chapter Six

Kane

The moon is like a spotlight.

I wandered down the boardwalk and kicked off my shoes before I took the steps to the beach.

It was well after two. Alma passed out from too much champagne, but I was restless.

Work.

I needed to get back to work so my mind would have something to focus on.

I wasn’t built for extended weekend vacations.

The sand was warm between my toes despite the chilly wind.

I’d come to Southampton with my family when I was growing up and always loved the ocean. My mother said I should’ve been born in California.

I preferred warm weather, but New York was where I was meant to be. In the city. Surrounded by traffic and people and noise.

It was quiet out here. Too quiet.

Quiet gave me too much time to think.

And I didn’t need that.

“Come on, JoJo. Let’s swim.”

I jerked my head toward the shoreline. They were fifty yards away, but I’d recognize that dress anywhere. It suited her much better than her normal attire.

A guy I remembered from the party had his shirt unbuttoned. It flapped in the breeze as he tugged on her arm.

Even from this distance I saw her stiffen. Felt her tension.

Why was he still here?

The party had ended a half hour ago.

He managed to pull her closer to the water. Waves crashed over her feet, soaking the bottom of her dress.

My pace quickened as I felt her fear as if it were my own.

“Tom, no.”

“Jo . . . let’s have some fun.” He scooped her off her feet.

She let out a startled cry and thrashed in his arms as he waded farther into the water. “Put me down.”

He laughed. “Sure thing.”

He tossed her into the black ocean. She screamed and flailed before she landed with a splash.

I sprinted to the water. Thank God for the moonlight. The waves had already swallowed the circle of bubbles where she’d landed.

I shoved the bastard out of the way and dove into the water. Salt stung my eyes. I could hardly see, but I swam as hard as I could in the direction he’d tossed her.

I surfaced for air and searched for any sign of her. A hand clawed at the water several yards away. The ocean had already drifted her down the shore.

I dove under again and raced in her direction, slicing through the turbulent waves.

Ahead, something thrashed in the water, fighting to reach the surface, but losing.

Dark hair illuminated in the moonlight as JoJo sank farther into the depths of the ocean. She kicked her legs and moved her arms to no avail.

I used all my strength to reach her.

Her eyes widened when she saw me. And she held out her hands as if begging for my help.

I kicked harder, my lungs burning as I held my breath. I stretched and snagged her by the waist. Her arms fell around my shoulders as I pushed us toward the moonlight and the surface.

We broke into the night air. She coughed and spluttered. Her cheeks were pale as her chest heaved.
