HOME ALONE
Every exterior door was replaced with a reinforced door. Security bars were installed over every window on the first floor. Additional motion-sensing lights were set up along the walkways in the front and back of the lake house as well as along the driveway. In the corner above the front door, a new security camera recorded the porch.
Nestor had purchased more surveillance cameras to cover the other areas surrounding the lake house. He had been preparing to install them all by himself since there were no appointments available for a week, but he became distracted by a cracking noise in the woods next to his home. He stood between trees and shrubs, head swiveling as he scanned the area.
Holding his cell phone up to his ear, he listened to the ringback tone. He had dialed Minaâs number on his cell phone prior to investigating the noise.
The call went to voicemail.
Nestor said, âMina, hey... Itâs been a few days since Iâve heard from you. I get it. Youâre afraid youâll have second thoughts about this, uh... temporary âsplit upâ if we talk. I donât expect you to tell me where you are. Maybe itâs better if I donât know anyway. As far as we know, Butterfly could be listening to our calls.â
His eyes rose to the branches above him upon hearing a creaking noise. A part of him was hoping to find his stalker sitting on one of those trees. Passing between the leaves, shafts of dark orange sunlight beamed down on him. It was getting late.
He continued, âI just want to know that youâre both okay. Send me a sign if you can. Call me back and hang up. Send me a text. Anything. I know youâre still angry at me. Iâm angry at myself. I let this go too far. I admit that Iâve been having trouble... processing everything. But itâll be over soon. Iâm going to get proof, and Iâm going to send it straight to the police. Iâll do it the right way this time.â
He didnât have enough light to properly set up the rest of the surveillance cameras. So, he walked back to the house, unlocked the back door with his new key, then went inside. He secured every lock and checked them twice.
Peeking out the rear window, he said, âI just need you to trust me. I hope youâre far away from here. I want you two to be safe until this is over. Thatâs all Iâve ever wanted. Iâve been doing this for us. Sorry if I sound like Iâm rambling. Iâm okay, so please donât worry about me. And yeah, thatâs... thatâs it, I guess. Call me when you get the chance. I love you two more than anything else in the world.â
Nestor lowered the phone and stared down at it. The call continued for another five seconds before he ended it. From the outer edge of his vision, he saw something move. He snapped his head up. It was getting darker. There was no one outside.
