The water convulsed, waves rippling outward as the force of the explosion reverberated through its depths. Rebecca and Trent barely made it into the water before the blast came, their bodies somersaulted forward by the shockwave. As she struggled to know which direction led to the surface, Rebecca kicked off her shoes as the waterlogged weight of them pulled her down.

Despite its weight and confining nature, she made the difficult decision to keep her Kevlar vest. It was hell to swim in, but she was certain she’d need every protection to escape this nightmare. Debris rained down around them, each piece a reminder of the narrowly avoided death. At least that determined which way was up.

Dodging it all and fighting against the swirling currents, Rebecca swam to the surface. Her hand struck air, and she kicked hard, driving herself upward.

As her face came loose of the water’s hold, she sucked in a deep breath. The air stank of burning gas, sending her mind hurtling back to the events at Little Quell Island. After being ambushed by cartel drug runners, she’d been left alone in the water as she pushed the boat with her men in it toward safety.

The scent acted as a double trigger, recalling the parking garage where she’d been ambushed for the first time. Panic threatened to claw its way up her throat, but she fought it down with sheer determination.

Losing herself in fear wasn’t an option, not when lives were at stake. And vomiting while she was trying to swim would be a quick, nasty, and embarrassing way to die.

Rebecca turned to where the brightest light came from. Mallard’s boat was engulfed in flames, a sinking pyre that illuminated the chaotic scene. The blast from the large ship had torn through its hull, leaving twisted metal and shattered wood in its wake. People were screaming on board, their cries distorted and muffled. Flames danced across the surface of the water, casting eerie shadows over the survivors.

Something made a splashing sound behind her, and she spun around. Trent was swimming her way.

“Are you okay?” Rebecca had to yell to be heard over the sputtering roar of the flames as more boats caught on fire.

“Think so.” His dark eyes reflected the firelight. “You?”

That was the third time Trent had saved her life. Before now, he’d stopped Rod Hammond and then, later, Elaina Roth from sticking her with a knife. This time, he’d somehow deduced there was a bomb on the boat. “I’m okay.”

It was hard not to feel grateful, but there simply wasn’t time to dwell on it. They needed to get out of the water before the flames reached them or the killer returned.

Christoph Blake’s body was floating in a pool of oil, flames melting his hair and lapping at his gaping mouth. She turned away before she had to see his face burn off.

She pushed herself up higher and yelled over the noise of the inferno, her voice strained with effort. “We need to get out of here.
