Devan came out the side door as Payton reached her Jeep. “Car service. I feel important.”

“You are important. Hop in.”

Devan dropped into the Jeep, then leaned over and looked at the odometer. “Why didn’t you keep the colonel’s Jeep and trade this one in? You have at least fifty thousand miles more than she had on hers.”

“True, but I didn’t want any reminders of Gore, Mobley, or Driscoll at our house. Even repainted, it would’ve been a constant reminder.”

“Yeah, I can see that.”

“I’m looking. I have my eye on a sweet Range Rover Sport. I’m just waiting for the sales agent to get hungry enough to make a deal.”

“Jesus. Don’t those things start at like a hundred grand?”

“Yep, that’s why I’m biding my time. Custom paint, leather interior, panorama sunroof. The agent will keep looking at the commission numbers, and he’ll get hungry enough. If not, then I wait.”

“I think I paid a grand for my Jeep, and if I remember correctly, my rust bucket came in very handy for you last month.”

“Touché. Tell you what, if you ever buy a new one, I’ll take the old one off your hands. Ya never know when we might need it again.”

“Yeah, right. After the cost of this wedding, the next thing I’ll be able to buy is my casket.”

“Don’t tell me you’re broke. You’ve been living in a dump since you came back to Fort Meade. They should be paying you to live in that pit, not the other way around. Plus, you’re finally getting rid of it, right? So that will save you even more.” Payton turned into the parking lot at JDs. “By the way, I need to send someone over to pick up the bed—I’m keeping it. The bed in the guestroom is horrible.”

“Are you and colonel fighting, and she’s sent to the guestroom?”

“No, not today, anyway.”

“Have you looked at that mattress? You don’t want it, and Goodwill won’t have it because our blood is smeared all over it.”

“Oh, yeah.” Payton gave the waitress a wave as she and Devan walked inside. “We’ll take the regular, Carley.”

“I’ll bring your drinks right over.”

Payton grabbed their regular booth in the back. “Is it sad that we come in here so often that we have a regular?”

“We keep them in business.”

After Carley brought their drinks, Payton jumped on the covert mission Mara was setting up. “The colonel tells me that you’re going to do some recon for her with Colonel Wheeler?”

“Yes.” Devan sucked up a drink of Pepsi and eyed Payton. “Wanna tell me the juicy details? Please don’t tell me she’s another Driscoll.”

“The Kassie Wheeler that I knew way back would equal Driscoll. We were dating when I met Mara. It wasn’t pretty. I instantly fell in love with Mara and just as quickly dumped Kassie—pulled an Alex. She didn’t take it well and proceeded to stalk me, left notes on my car, at my apartment, on my locker at work, even keyed my car. Actually, I’d forgotten about her keying my car—did it the first night I stayed over at Mara’s.
