Devan came out the side door as Payton reached her Jeep. âCar service. I feel important.â
âYou are important. Hop in.â
Devan dropped into the Jeep, then leaned over and looked at the odometer. âWhy didnât you keep the colonelâs Jeep and trade this one in? You have at least fifty thousand miles more than she had on hers.â
âTrue, but I didnât want any reminders of Gore, Mobley, or Driscoll at our house. Even repainted, it wouldâve been a constant reminder.â
âYeah, I can see that.â
âIâm looking. I have my eye on a sweet Range Rover Sport. Iâm just waiting for the sales agent to get hungry enough to make a deal.â
âJesus. Donât those things start at like a hundred grand?â
âYep, thatâs why Iâm biding my time. Custom paint, leather interior, panorama sunroof. The agent will keep looking at the commission numbers, and heâll get hungry enough. If not, then I wait.â
âI think I paid a grand for my Jeep, and if I remember correctly, my rust bucket came in very handy for you last month.â
âTouché. Tell you what, if you ever buy a new one, Iâll take the old one off your hands. Ya never know when we might need it again.â
âYeah, right. After the cost of this wedding, the next thing Iâll be able to buy is my casket.â
âDonât tell me youâre broke. Youâve been living in a dump since you came back to Fort Meade. They should be paying you to live in that pit, not the other way around. Plus, youâre finally getting rid of it, right? So that will save you even more.â Payton turned into the parking lot at JDs. âBy the way, I need to send someone over to pick up the bedâIâm keeping it. The bed in the guestroom is horrible.â
âAre you and colonel fighting, and sheâs sent to the guestroom?â
âNo, not today, anyway.â
âHave you looked at that mattress? You donât want it, and Goodwill wonât have it because our blood is smeared all over it.â
âOh, yeah.â Payton gave the waitress a wave as she and Devan walked inside. âWeâll take the regular, Carley.â
âIâll bring your drinks right over.â
Payton grabbed their regular booth in the back. âIs it sad that we come in here so often that we have a regular?â
âWe keep them in business.â
After Carley brought their drinks, Payton jumped on the covert mission Mara was setting up. âThe colonel tells me that youâre going to do some recon for her with Colonel Wheeler?â
âYes.â Devan sucked up a drink of Pepsi and eyed Payton. âWanna tell me the juicy details? Please donât tell me sheâs another Driscoll.â
âThe Kassie Wheeler that I knew way back would equal Driscoll. We were dating when I met Mara. It wasnât pretty. I instantly fell in love with Mara and just as quickly dumped Kassieâpulled an Alex. She didnât take it well and proceeded to stalk me, left notes on my car, at my apartment, on my locker at work, even keyed my car. Actually, Iâd forgotten about her keying my carâdid it the first night I stayed over at Maraâs.
