Apollo
Sitting beside Henry, his big warm hand clasping mine, I listened and cried soft, quiet tears. Of course I could see Bryan, and listen to what he said, but I didnât say a word. It wasnât my business. The two men barely knew each other yet they shared a common bond. Theyâd both been abused by the same man. Sniffling madly as the whispered conversation went on, I worked on slipping my hand free of the tight grip Henry had on it.
I pointed to my running nose then at the box of tissues across the room. He nodded. Rising from the sofa, I slid my fingertips over his, then his hand dropped to the couch. The tissue run was a necessity. Sneaking into the kitchen to pour us both tall glasses of Agua de Jamaica then puttering around with a plate of Torticas de Moron wasnât a necessity at all. It was an excuse to splash water on my face, gather myself, and give Henry and Bryan privacy. When I returned with our drinks and Henryâs new favorite cookies in the worldâhis words not mineâhe was sitting with the phone on his thigh, his gaze locked on the stone fireplace.
âIt took you twenty-five minutes to make drinks,â he pointed out, his sight moving to me as I placed the tray on the coffee table.
âIâm sorry. I felt like a creeper listening to that conversation.â He sighed then held out his hand. I took it, sitting with a leg tucked under me. âDid it help? Talking to him? I hope I didnât overstep my bounds as yourâ¦â I bumbled around, mentally looking for the right word. Iâd signed on as a companion but weâd taken things way past a simple cook/light housekeeping/caretaker relationship. Weâd had that moment on the veranda. That had made everything different in so many ways. âIâm not sure what we are anymore.â
âNo, me either. I know my days are sunnier with you in them.â
Yes, mine were too. âAmigos Soleados.â He stared at me in confusion. âSunny friends.â
He nodded. I wiggled my fingers free long enough to pour our drinks and offer him some cookies. Then I curled into his side, nibbled on a cookie, and sipped the sweet hibiscus tea as his fingers toyed with mine. Friends. I didnât want to be friends with him, not really. I wanted more with him despite knowing I shouldnât.
âThanks, for calling Bryan. That really helped.â
âAnytime. All I want is to see you happy and healthy,â I said around a bite of cookie.
âThatâs the same way I feel about you, Apollo.â
He pressed a kiss to my ear as I pushed play on Evita, a movie Henry had never seen before. It was a simple gesture, nothing grand or erotic, but it was steeped with tenderness and a warm familiarity that set off a wild chain reaction of emotion deep within me. I sucked in a breath, held it, and let it out, but was still certain that with a simple peck to my ear Iâd tumbled madly in love.
