The drive to Walnut Creek isnât too bad, and I miss most of the weekend shopping traffic headed out there. Walnut Creek is a lot like many of the smaller cities in the East Bay. Nothing of much interest outside of track homes and shopping. The uniqueness of the community has long since disappeared and the only traces that remain are a handful of independent businesses on the edges of the downtown area. I drive past all this and head into a gated community on the edge of town. Parking is not an issue as Mr. Greenbow lives in a development of mini mansions with little semi-circular driveways that hold six or seven cars at a time. I pull in and park. When I get out of Tilda, heâs already waiting for me at the front door.
Mr. Greenbow walks out to meet me. âWelcome to my home, Mr. Gavin. I hope the drive wasnât too bad.â
He reminds me of my high school science teacher. Traces of scalp showing through his thinning hair, heâs of average height and appearance. Heâs rocking the polyester khakis and short-sleeved, button-up, blue Oxford look. Black box-toed shoes and belt complete the outfit. At one point, he couldâve probably melted into any crowd unnoticed because of his average build, looks, and demeanor. Contrary to his average, relaxed appearance, he canât seem to stop fidgeting and doesnât know what to do with his hands.
âThank you, Mr. Greenbow, no the drive was fine. And call me Gavin.â
A little tension melts from his shoulders, and I can almost feel his nerves blow away. âAll right, Gavin, call me John. Please, follow me.â
We walk into his house and past his front living room. Iâm always amazed at how some people consider a sign of wealth to be an extra living room that no one ever uses. It has all the normal living room features, like couches, chairs, tables and various other decorations. The problem is, they are all almost unused. You can still see the vacuum lines on the upholstery from their last cleaning.
We continue down a hallway and take the first door which is a home office. He walks around the massive, dark wood desk and gestures to the opposite seat for me. I take the offer and find the chair surprisingly comfortable. Itâs all cherry-stained wood, dark leather upholstery, and brass rivets. High-end stuff ten years ago, but timeless and well maintained. It reminds me of my fatherâs office.
âSo, how can I help you, Gavin? Ms. LaMar asked me to speak to you about the killings. Iâm not sure what I can do, but Iâll do what I am able.â he offers as he sits.
âI just wanted to ask you some questions and check out your property to see if the killer has visited or at least if he left any sign of visiting.â
Pausing for a moment I looking around the room and spot the motion detectors on the ceiling in the corners. Thereâs probably a high-end security system here, and hopefully it has a good backlog of video.
