Chapter Three

“Another galaxy, you say?”

“It’s called Pegasus,” Daniel explained from where he leaned against the wall in Jack’s quarters/cell. “It’s where the Ancients went when they left Earth. We have a base in one of their abandoned cities…” His eyebrows twitched, brow wrinkling. “It’s, uh, it’s actually called Atlantis.”

Jack couldn’t keep the sardonic twist from his lips. “As in ‘The Lost City of…’?”

“Yep. That’s the one.”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Atlantis sank.”

“Turns out it did.” Daniel pushed himself off the wall and dropped into one of the plastic chairs on the other side of the table from where Jack sat with his feet propped up. “We—that is, the Atlantis Expedition—raised the city. That was nine years ago now.”

Jack huffed out a laugh. “You do realize that sounds like bullshit?”

“More so than an alien portal that lets you travel between planets?”

He shrugged, conceding the point, and fixed his old friend with a steady look. “So what’s it got to do with me?”

“There may be an opening there, for you.”

For a moment he just stared, not quite taking it in. “Come again?”

“An opening,” Daniel said, slowly, like he was talking to a child. “One of the Atlantis team is in trouble. And you...” He shrugged. “Well, you have something they need, so I thought— That is, we thought this would be an opportunity for you to … to find a place for yourself.”

“In another galaxy.” He lifted an eyebrow. “Another galaxy, Daniel.”

Daniel spread his hands, pressing them flat on the table. “Pegasus is an incredible place, Jack. And Atlantis …? You’ve never seen anything like it. It’s beautiful, powerful—oh, and it’s a ship as well as a city. Did I mention that? I mean the thing flies. It’s how the Ancients left Earth, actually, and it’s—” He smiled, obviously reigning in the enthusiasm. “Look, trust me, this is an incredible opportunity.”

“Sure,” Jack said, playing it cool even if his heartbeat had kicked up a notch at this unexpected offer. “An incredible opportunity for General O’Neill to get rid of me.”

Daniel tipped his head, brow furrowing in irritation. “Actually, he was opposed to the idea. If it makes you feel any better, I had to talk him into it.”

“And why would you do that?”

Daniel let out a slow breath, steepling his fingers and looking at Jack over their tips. “Because, no matter what you might think, I’m still your friend. And because I know that this is your best—probably your only—shot at getting back into the game.”

Swinging his feet down from the table, Jack stood up and paced toward the locked door. “And what is it they need from me? I’m guessing it’s not my winning sense of humor.”

“No. It’s something in your brain. Something we think the Asgard may have left there when they were removing the Ancient database you downloaded the first time.”

Jack’s mind snagged on that for a moment. “The first time?”

“Ah, yeah, he did it again. Long story, but the point is that they need you on Atlantis.
