CHAPTER 15
The months passed quickly and uneventfully. School was normal with the exception of grad night and graduation in the air.
“Girl, what are you wearing to grad night?”
Dahli was all into the senior activities, but I was just ready for the year to be over so I could go see my baby.
“I have no idea. I do know that whatever it is, it has to be comfortable. Walking through Disney all night, with heels and some pussy huggers on, wouldn’t be cute. Not to mention truly uncomfortable.”
“Do you wanna go to the mall this afternoon? You know there’s only a couple days until we go.” It was shocking Dahli was actually going to leave Lamont’s side long enough to spend time with me. Damn right, I was hating.
“Who? Do you mean just you and me? Not you, me, and him?”
Dahli smiled my comment off. “No, girl, just you and me. Lamont doesn’t have to go everywhere with me.”
“You could’ve fooled me. Okay, then yes we can go, but I’m only going to get something simple.”
“Me, too, girl; I’m not trying to outdo anybody. I just wanna have fun.” Dahli stopped and looked at me for a moment. “Jay, what’s wrong? You’ve been acting a little strange lately. Do you still think that J.B. is cheating on you?”
I didn’t say a word. I just stared at the worn-out lunch table that we had claimed as our own since freshman year.
“Come on, Jay, the boy proposed to you. You are engaged. Do you think he would’ve gone that far if he was cheating on you?”
I answered my friend’s question, trying to fight back tears. “Honestly, Dahli, I don’t know. He has been acting strange, and I can feel in my heart that something just isn’t right with Joshua.”
“Did you ask him?”
“No, I never got around to saying anything to him about it.”
“So why the fuck are you tripping? Just ask him! Either he is or he isn’t, and if he isn’t, then leave it alone; but if he is, then what to do about it is a decision that you will have to make. That’s all you have to do. Javaya, stop putting yourself through this bullshit, huh. Besides, it’s making you look old.” Dahli started laughing and got up from the table. “Come on, girl, time to go to class.”
I got up and followed her down the hall to class. In a way, that quick little talk with Dahli really helped me. I now knew what it was that I had to do, but the problem was when and how to do it. Did I really want to know the truth?
Afterschool, I headed home to meet Dahli so we could go to the mall; instead, I pulled up to find not Dahli, but Bonnie and Cassie. I pulled up cautiously, expecting there to be some drama.
“What are y’all doing here?” It was strange for those two to just show up out of nowhere.
Bonnie popped off first. “Look, Jay, we didn’t come here to start any drama; we just came to holla at you.
