Orvieto

I recently took a group of students to Italy for a couple weeks. I was teaching a class on the medieval period and technology, exploring ways in which culture shifts and how the Middle Ages still inform the way we look at the world today. We stayed in a monastery in Orvieto, a beautiful city halfway between Rome and Florence. In the center of the town is a beautiful church whose cornerstone was laid by a thirteenth-century pope.

On the first day of classes, we explored the city with the task to use all our senses and then write a poem about what we discovered. Everyone was to touch, taste, smell, and look at the city. This is what I wrote:

Layers of history slide

Beneath my soft skin

Touching the hard edge of ages

Volcanic ground beneath my feet

Supports yet one more pilgrim

Ancient truths inscribed in ochre

Picasso-striped cathedral

Once proud, now struggling

Gray against a sky that

Moves faster than time

Coughs and splutters

Espresso machines kick into life

The sound of a million heartbeats

In one cup
