Three hours later, Alvin painfully dumped a final cart-full of emergency supplies into the central area of the shuttle—they landed in a pile against the weight of a stack of newly-printed water bottles. He blindly pushed the cart back into the shuttle bay, where it rolled freely until it struck the bulkhead on the opposite side of the room with a muted thud.

He started to pick up one of the boxes, moaned, dropped it, then said to himself, “No rush, I’ll have plenty of time to clean up later.”

He shuffled over to the table, then sat for a while rubbing his sore arms and breathing heavily.

Once he caught his breath, he returned to the Faro’s bridge via the elevator to complete the final steps of his evacuation.

“Enter an abandoned ship status in the log and update the SOS packet. Once the shuttle is clear, power down all systems except the ship-to-ship transmitter. That should keep it going for a few days,” Alvin ordered, then started to rise.

“Acknowledged,” the system’s voice responded, as the control screen folded forward.

“Well, Maria,” Alvin said sadly, as he took in the dull grey room, “she was good to us. I hope whoever claims the salvage won’t just scrap her.”

After wiping his eyes, Captain Alvin Faro then left the bridge of the PCV Faro for the final time.
