Sleep eluded me the remainder of the night. I finally rose, bathed and dressed in a clean shift and gown, then examined the room to ensure no trace remained of my tryst with my master’s kinsman. No. I straightened resolutely, tamping down the flame burning in my soul for this man. Such sentiment would only serve to get us both killed. I told myself Drengr’s words had been said in a moment of passion, not out of any real love for me. He was a man; a man with carnal needs like any other. I’d satisfied his needs and he’d been grateful. Nothing more.
