It is not implausible that what Field says is true. Yet in the face of what did transpire, what could Field have said that would have been more demeaning to Terry, for Terry to hear from his judicial adversary that his vaunted professions of honesty and trust would have been publicly reduced to abject compliance, for fear of losing some money?
