CHAPTER SIX

LINE OF DUTY

Angarsk, eastern Russia, December 1998

Teenage schoolgirl Svetlana Misyavitchus hated walking home from her best friend’s house at night, but she had little choice in the matter as no one in her family owned a car. On this particularly cold evening, dense snow was falling, and she could barely see more than 50 yards in front of her. The streets of Angarsk were eerily empty because few people in these parts ventured out after darkness fell, especially in such extreme weather conditions.

It was a neighbourhood where blocks of apartments dominated sprawling concrete housing estates that overlooked huge factories, many of which had thick poisonous clouds belching out of them day and night. To make matters worse for 17-year-old Svetlana, most of the street lights on her route home had either been broken by vandals or simply allowed to burn out to save money. Times were hard in this former Soviet enclave back in 1998. Local authorities were often broke and the country’s infrastructure since the fall of communism at the start of the decade had been crumbling at an alarming rate.

Svetlana was just about to cross a deserted, windswept road when she noticed a car turn into the street about two hundred metres ahead of her. At first, she stopped in her tracks, scared that it might mean trouble. A lot of men kerb-crawled around the nearby industrial estate at night looking for women to pay for sex. When the weather was as bad as it was that evening, they often looked further afield for prostitutes because so few were out in their usual haunts. Over the previous few months, Svetlana had twice angrily rejected male motorists who’d offered her cash and tried to persuade her to get in their cars. Luckily, neither of the men had got violent with her. Svetlana had two school friends who’d not been so fortunate and had almost ended up being raped in recent months.

Svetlana took a short, sharp intake of breath and continued to walk across the street, even though the car she’d just seen was moving slowly in her direction. As she always did when these sorts of situations arose, Svetlana stared down at the pavement and kept walking. Her mother had told her long ago that she shouldn’t look these sorts of men in the eye as that would only encourage them.

It was only as she reached the other side of the street that Svetlana sneaked another glance at the vehicle and realized it was a police cruiser. She felt much safer, so she lifted her head, held her shoulders back and continued walking on the pavement that bordered an abandoned warehouse with cracked and smashed, smoke-burnt glass windows. Svetlana noticed out of the corner of her eye that there was only one cop in the car, which was unusual as they tended to work in pairs. But she didn’t give it much thought and continued her journey.

The snow started falling even harder moments later, muffling the sound of the police car’s engine.
