Chapter Twenty-One
Brooke glanced down at Lizâs hand covering her own. How had she kept her feelings for Liz under control for the last year?
Right now, she was so close to confessing it all. She wanted to tell Liz that she wasnât drunk, that she wasnât sorry about kissing her, that sheâd wanted to do that for weeks, months even, but she couldnât, not when they still had their agreement. Brooke needed that money.
She had to pull it together. Fast. If she could just focus on the future, on being debt free and having this job as her photographer⦠But right now, all she wanted to do was kiss Liz again.
That kiss.
She didnât know what had come over her in that moment, but Brooke just went with it, pressing her lips against Lizâs, something sheâd daydreamed about more than once, and it was everything sheâd imagined and more. Lizâs soft lips fit perfectly against hers, and when she kissed Brooke back, a rush of desire flowed through her body.
Brookeâs heart thumped in her chest as Lizâs finger traced over her wrist, bringing her back to the present.
Why was this happening? She could still hear Lizâs words echoing in her mind.
âIf we werenât working together... Well, Iâd probably ask you out.â
Hearing Liz say that... It took every ounce of willpower for Brooke not to lean in again and capture her lips in another heart stopping kiss.
Liz had kissed her back. That was what was making this so difficult. Yes, she also pushed her away, but Brooke was going to cling to her initial reaction.
Brooke didnât know how she was going to get through this. All the lies were catching up with her, and this was the biggest one, trying to hide the way she felt about Liz, except that was the opposite of her job. She was supposed to make people believe that she was with Liz.
âBrooke? Are you okay? Please donât worry about Heather,â Liz said, giving her hand a squeeze before she withdrew it.
âIâm fine,â she managed to say, but it came out a little too rough, and Lizâs eyes were back, searching her own. âReally,â she said clearing her throat. âI just canât believe she did that.â
âI know. You would never know she was capable of that,â Liz said as she took a drink. âShe comes across as charming more often than not. Anyway, enough about her. What do you think about Pride though?â
Brooke inhaled. She didnât know what to think about any of this anymore. Part of her wanted to jump at any opportunity to spend time together, especially when it was a public event where they would have to pretend to be together.
Brooke could live in her fantasy for a little longer, but now, the thought of it was less appealing. Maybe she should just do the bare minimum, only the essential events, so she could limit this torture.
âBrooke?â Liz asked, a smile tugging at her lips. âWhereâd you go just now?â
âNowhere. So, Pride... Uh...â
âYou donât have to decide right now.
