Seven

It was eleven that night before Brittany turned around in the bar to find Emilio lounging against the doorjamb while he watched her.

He walked over to her. “Hi. Think I can have a dance?”“I don’t seem to be needed in any particular place right now so, yes, you can,” she replied.

He took her hand and led her to the lounge dance floor and turned her toward him. Dressed in brown slacks and tan shirt, he was as handsome as ever. Black locks of hair fell over his forehead. It was the searing need in his crystal eyes that stirred her own longing.

Wordlessly, they began to dance and the air between them sparked with fire. She knew she was wearing a sexy outfit, dancing a hot, Latin number that meant moving her body in an enticing manner. Tonight, she wanted to be appealing to him. Desire burned a steady, hot flame in her.

Was she ready to throw consequences to the wind? She knew she already had. As she danced around him, she watched him and their surroundings vanished.

Her world narrowed to the flashing lights, a pounding beat and the sexy male moving his hips and long legs and watching her with that devouring look that made her feel as if she were the most desirable woman on earth.

When the dance ended, he took her hand and they left the dance floor and headed toward a table. As they moved through the crowd, she noticed Juan, one of the waitstaff, step into the lounge and look all around and she withdrew her hand from Emilio’s. “I think I’m wanted,” she said, hurrying to the door and waving at Juan. The minute she walked up to him, he began to talk.

“Let’s go see,” Emilio said from behind her. Taking her arm, they hurried after Juan, who led the way to the kitchen where Hector lay on the floor with his eyes open and a compress on his forehead. Waitstaff and chefs were clustered around him and moved back to give Brittany and Emilio room.

“I’m okay,” Hector insisted when Brittany knelt beside him. “Cancel the ambulance. I don’t need one.”

“I know, but you should still get checked out by professionals,” Brittany said, concerned about him even though it was reassuring to have him say he was all right. “Lie still until they get here.” She glanced up at Emilio, who had called 911, and she heard him tell them to turn the siren off when they entered the Brittany Beach drive and to come around to the back to the kitchen door.

He clicked off and looked at Brittany. “I’ll take you to the hospital when Hector goes.”

“I got knocked out,” Hector grumbled. “I’ll be all right.”

“Let them look you over to make sure,” Brittany said. “I insist and we’ll cover any charges the insurance doesn’t.”

“I’ll wait outside for the ambulance,” Emilio said and left.

When the paramedics arrived, the time
