The air around them went from calm and carefree to supercharged with her statement. She could practically see the apprehension pouring off Luis in waves as they climbed into the vehicle.
"I figured we would be going back to my mother's house or your parents'."
She let him think that before she was released, so he wouldn't try to change her mind. Abby refused to live in fear; the only way to avoid it was to face what happened head-on.
"All my stuff is at my place."
"Your parents already packed you a bag."
Abby stood her ground. "I'm sure they did, but I'd still like to go. It's important to me."
Indecision was easy to read in Luis's expression. She would feel the same if the roles were reversed.
She knew she won when Luis let out a loud exhale. "Let me drop Luey and my mother off and then we can go."
She caught Ms. Oliveira's gaze in the rearview mirror and she could've sworn she saw pride before the older woman looked away.
The drive through the city was quiet. Everyone seemed to be lost in their own heads. She was sure Luis was trying to figure out a way to change her mind, and his mother was worried because her son was. Just like any good mother would be.
Luis didn't speak again until they were standing outside her apartment.
"You don't have to do this."
And that was where he was wrong. She absolutely did need to do this, and she told him as much.
"Can't face my fears if I don't. Besides, I really don't want to give Trenton any more power. He took enough when he beat me."
He still didn't look completely convinced, but at least he wasn't arguing with her anymore about it. She would take the small win.
Abby did her best to hide the small tremor in her hands by sticking them into the sweatshirt her parents brought her to come home in. It was a little too hot in the year to be wearing long sleeves, but it was better than people giving her funny looks because she was covered in bruises. It was bad enough that she couldn't cover up the ones on her face. No reason to give people more of a reason to stare.
She didn't do a good job of hiding it. Luis slid in behind her and placed a comforting hand on her lower back. She soaked up the feeling. For too long, she hoped more than anything to have his hands on her. Now that they were, she wished her body wasn't bruised and battered.
And maybe that she had fewer clothes on.
That would be ideal.
Her apartment wasn't as bad as she expected. She didn't remember much of the fight with Trenton but she thought for some reason there would be more destruction, more chaos.
"Did someone clean up?"
It was the only thing that made sense. The only question was why? If they didn't expect her to come back so soon, why did anyone bother?
"Blue stayed an extra day." Luis shrugged.
