Chapter 11

The car moved off fast. “How much shit are we in?” I asked Wei.

Wei glanced back to Vroom’s hotel and lowered his head. “I have no idea. But it won’t be good.”

When he went silent, we all did. Lan knotted her fingers with mine and though there was a significant amount of pain, I relished in the feel of her still with me.

Wei glanced between us. “I don’t know what’s going on, but watch the ‘hands on’ around the sect grounds. They don’t like any relationships between us. We can’t be seen to flake out in bad situations over the partner either.”

It seemed to take a while, but the car eventually stopped, and the doctor got out first with Zhu and Joe behind him. “We’ve to report to room 178 in the training house,” Wei said. “I’ll inform the Grand Master we’re here for debrief and report to Sect Lord Zhong.”

“You have to go directly to him?” I asked.

Wei didn’t even look at me. “You have a lot to learn, and you’re gonna get a crash course today. Go, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

He got out and walked in the opposite direction, shoulders straight, head high.

“I never expected any of that,” Lan said and slid out of the car herself. When she offered me a hand on the other side, I declined and pushed myself up and out.

“Pain still the same?” the doctor asked.

“Getting worse,” I replied honestly.

“I’ll nip to medical, see you in a moment.” He rushed off in the opposite direction, completely ignoring the fact we’d been told to report to room 178.

Zhu and Joe led the way, not talking. Lan followed, with me slightly behind. Every step was agony. The pain was worse than when I’d shattered my hip. I didn’t show her any of it. She took my good hand in hers, though. “You just told the doctor it was getting worse.”

“It will get better,” I winked at her.

Room 178 was just a classroom. Zhu and Joe sat, while Lan paced up and down. I flexed my leg, not only pushing the pain boundaries but getting used to how it felt.

We all waited.

Five minutes passed.

Ten minutes passed.

The doctor returned with a 3D pad and bag. “Let me look.” He waved down my body.

I nodded and stood still while he held the imaging device at me. “Damn.”

Then he rummaged around in his bag once more.

“What?” Lan said.

“Pain relief,” he said. “I’ve got something strong enough. I think.” He continued to rummage. “Might knock an elephant out.”

I stepped to him, put a hand on his bag. “If that’s enough to knock an elephant out, I’m not taking it, not now.”

Lan frowned. “Kei—”

The door opened, and we all turned to see Wei, his face pale. No one asked; no one dared.

“Sect Lord Zhong has asked to see you and I.” Wei looked directly at me, then to the others. “Doc, go home. The others dismissed, go get some sleep.”

“What?” Lan asked. “Sleep, you’re kidding me?”

Wei leveled his eyes with hers, and she lowered her head, flushed.
