CHAPTER 13

SINCLAIR

While the team prepared Tank for the ransom plan, I wondered exactly when I'd be able to get back some semblance of a normal life. With Andy essentially out of the way, I should have been able to go back to work. I could stop looking over my shoulder and focus more on the customers like I used to.

Except I had a feeling it wouldn't be so easy. I knew this entire experience changed me. It made me more cautious and paranoid, but it also proved to me that there was so much going on that I didn't know about.

The entire discovery of Andy and Brad's connection was a curveball. I had no clue there were any feelings from Andy since he only ever came around with threats. And back when Brad and I dated, he never mentioned Andy at all.

I got so lost in my thoughts I didn't notice Memphis moving closer to me. His hand touched mine, which jolted me back to the present and had me gazing up at him with questions in my eyes.

"You ok, LB? Is something bothering you?" He asked.

With a confidence I didn't feel, I gave a solid nod. "Yeah, there is. I want to know when I can go back to the shop. I've got a business to run and employees to manage. It can't just be left alone. I have bills to pay as well."

"No, you don't," he replied quickly. "Well, you do for some things, but all the immediate stuff is taken care of."

His words were not comforting like I think he meant for them to be. What did he mean that I didn't have anything immediate? As if he could see how his words bothered me, he forged ahead with an explanation.

"The moment I knew Andy, Brad, and Culpepper were connected; I took it upon myself to adjust things around to be able to protect you better. Just because we have Andy in custody doesn't mean Culpepper won't send others to do his bidding."

"I hadn't thought of that," I admitted to him.

He gave me a sad half smile. "I know you hadn't, LB. That's my job. You get to see the good in people, and I can sort out all their bullshit. As I was saying, though, I made some adjustments. Your rent and utilities for both the shop and your apartment are covered for the next sixty days. If this goes beyond that, we'll add on more. Anything else you have like cell phones and such will need to be covered too, but I was in a rush, so I only hit the big stuff."

I gaped at him, unsure how to respond. It didn't matter, though, because Takeshi was there to intervene.

"Maybe you should have eased that information on him. He appears to be startled by your level of affection, Memphis," the kind man said.

My head bobbed quickly as if to agree with him. "But the shop still needs to run. I have employees to pay," I added as an afterthought.
